This post was inspired by two things I saw recently:

  • Jonny Price of WeFunder, sharing their newly designed raise page, featuring some giants of tech like Substack, Mercury and Levels.
  • Xalavier Nelson Jr. of Strange Scaffold, commenting on the seemingly extreme success of Larian Studios, with the upcoming release of Baldur’s Gate, and imporing consumers that it not “raise the standard”.

The connection between these two items is not obvious, but it is interesting.

Yeah imo it's a pretty bullshit take to say what xalavier did. Like no shit not every new RPG is gonna be to the same quality as bg3 but is that us as the consumer's fault? We're supposed to just ignore bg3 and be happy with the status quo? When has being stagnant ever been good for anyone, ever? Fuck off and just make a good game and no one will complain

Nothing is gonna change. Consumers gonna consume

People will preorder the next cash grab and whoever cares about quality games will just have to wait. Although i have to admit that it will be pretty much impossible to match the love and care larian poures into their games.
