Maybe I'm a sucker, but mac and cheese will always be a favorite on the trail or so home.
camping
All things back-country camping! Gear discussions, destination talks and everything else within that realm
It takes some preparation beforehand, but nothing beats a good campfire Mac n' Cheese.
To feed a lot, spaghetti goes the distance. I like some good brats - if frozen solid they act as an ice pack on day 1. But my favourite.. what makes a good camp out , is breakfast. Eggs scrambled , lots of Vermont maple sausage, all the grease and butter then to toast and perk pot death wish sludge. Soooo good
Can't go wrong with a nice steak! A pain without a grill though.
I've only made pizza this way once, halfway through a week long canoeing/camping trip. but it was amazing. Not too fancy, but delicious nonetheless. A lot of weight to carry for 3-4 days, but a drop in the bucket when you're in a canoe. Heavy rain started just before dinner, so we used the aluminum canoe as a lean-to to protect the fire:
Homemade tomato-based sauce dehydrated into a flaky powder and reconstituted on the day using filtered lake water
Dehydrated mozzarella similarly reconstituted
Store-bought, pre-made crusts
Pepperoni
Baked over coals on a wire rack (no direct flames)
Bacon and egg breakfast roll.
In a cast iron we cook up some potatoes, bacon, sausage, and eggs. Warm up some tortillas and make breakfast borritos.
Wrap a rack of ribs in foil for a bit, then take them out and baste and char them.
MREs all day any day. Lasagna is top tier
I used to take bread, burger meat, onions, and sweet peppers and put them all in a pie iron.
We called it hillbilly meat pie. Honestly writing this makes me want to make one again lmao
Tortellini with shrimp and tomato sauce (we use frozen shrimp), grilled fish, and basically any stir-fried food.
