Hello, all! As the title says, I'll be moving to Finland in a week. I'm an African coming for a bachelor's degree at TUNI. While I've had a lot of advice from TUNI student tutors and articles from different sites, any not-so-known or underrated one you have will be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

During wintertime, it's the darkness that hits you the most, not the cold. Even in south, there's only few hours of proper daylight. People with darker skin should use vitamine D supplements.

I'd say most people should try using D-vitamin supplements during winter.

Okay. What?

Am I the exception here? I don't do D-vitamin supplements at all. Although I do occasionally take (drink) multivitamin "fizzy tab" after I have woken up. I've been thinking to drop it. It seems to only taste good.

EDIT: South-eastern finn here writing this.

You can take a bloodtest to find out whether you have a deficit. I once did and vitamin D was the only value outside the boundaries.

I take my D-vitamin supplements as multivitamin "fizzy tab" after I've woken up. That's still taking D-vitamin supplements.

Yes it is.

But I've been thinking of stopping taking any supplements. Sometimes I've been without any for few weeks and I see (feel) no difference.

I think I'll test how I manage without any supplements trough the darker season.

I'm whiter than the typical Finn, but even I need to take vitamin D. When I finally started taking it, it was like night and day for me...

Thanks! I've actually been worried about the cold. The lowest temperature I've experienced here was still above 10°C. Freezing and below freezing temperatures... I shudder at the thought.

When it starts to get chilly, merino wool undergarments are your friend. When it gets really cold, dressing in layers is a necessity.

Finnish culture on average is quiet and reserved. Don't take it as negative attitude towards you.

We are not big on customs and procedure. We are not going to be insulted if you don't act in certain way.

Most here speak English or atleast understand it.

Communication networks here are extensive and cheap. No need to hunt for free wifi.

Tervetuloa!

Which part of Africa are you from? Moving in the summer is a great idea, but be prepared for the dark autumn. Until the snow falls it can be tough... Don't forget to take your vitamin D.

I'm from Nigeria. Other comments here also talk about the darkness and need for vitamin D. Will keep that in mind. Kiitos paljon!
