I dig, but how is this different from codependency?

For me, codependency is making sure the other person is happy/taken care of etc above and beyond your own needs. Whereas in Heinlein's formulation, your partner's happiness is necessary but not sufficient for your own happiness, that is to say, your needs/wants play as much a role in your happiness as the other person's happiness does.
