I have a HOB filter that is also probably cooling the water down a bit.

I’m not sure if this is a recommendation or not. I think not.

I’ve been using Hyger brand heaters and am happy with the design and apparent physical quality. But they’ve also failed at almost predictable one year intervals and I’ve replaced three now. Just two days or so ago I noticed one had failed by the clicking sound and my tank was >5 degrees higher already.

So I’d probably shy away from them at this point next time I buy one.

Filter wise though, I can’t speak highly enough of simple foam filters as long as you don’t need a lot of flow.
