Firstly just a quick thank you as the only reason I went through ADHD diagnosis was because people here were convinced I was trolling, or had undiagnosed ADHD when I was quite being dismissive of ADHD behaviour and arguing certain traits were just normal for everyone and people saying they had ADHD were just attention grabbing. Well I had to eat shit on that one as I actually did have ADHD and didn't know it.

So, the actual question I have is do you have lots of 'end it all' thoughts? Not in an emotional way, but like digesting news from around the world and seeing logically we are fucked so may as well just quit? Also I'm on 100mg sertraline but have ADHD treatment consultation tomorrow so has anyone been ok mixing antidepressants with ADHD stims?

I'm on both stims and antidepressants. Your doc will know which ones are ok to pair together. And it may take you some trial and error to find a combo that works for you.

As for news affecting mental health...well, I limit my intake. Significantly. And had to have repeated conversations with my SO to not talk about it with me.

Thank you. I hope there's not too much trial and error as just getting on the sertraline was awful at first.

I would challenge that belief.

Things are bad, sure. Climate is gonna change, people are gonna fight and die over the dumbest shit, and billionaires are going to loot any public good they can get their hands on.

But good people are still fighting. It's a lot less top-down and much less visible, but it's happening. Lives can still be saved, the damage can still be mitigated, and the bad guys can still be meaningfully opposed. Things can change quickly!

We have to keep in mind that the news is never gonna be good. Even when it isn't a glorified right-wing propaganda machine, it's a business that thrives on attention. And things that make you sad or scared or angry are always gonna grab your attention more than anything else.

We're not getting hit by a giant meteor. We're not all irrecoverably fucked. It's better to prepare for an uncertain better future than give up preemptively!

Regarding the end it all thoughts, I get that sometimes when I'm overwhelmed. Lately, I've been refocusing on what I can control, and that seems to make the problems more manageable. Whether Trump is going to destroy everything or not, I don't know. But I do know that I can't do anything about it. What I can do is improve my position and maybe my community so that we're better prepared if it happens.

My ADHD meds manage my depression alone. I will never take another SSRI again. They kill my personality and make me dull. SNRIs make me feel weird and have other physical side effects. Nope. The only antidepressant that I'm cool with is Wellbutrin because it gives me the choice to muscle thru and change things so that whatever is causing my depression is resolved, but its benefits only last a few months for me.

I think I understand what you mean re: recent news.

An ADHD brain may be more likely to extrapolate ideas, i.e., try to piece together small parts into a big picture whole and project it into the future. While these brains are good at this, beware that a lot of assumptions are being made about those future projections. Just because 2 ideas seem related, doesn't mean one will guarantee the other to happen.

Also, I'm not saying you should have rose tinted glasses. If you feel overwhelmed by everyday news, try pausing news consumption and know your brain is offering possible futures -- not guarantees of futures.

No, because humanity has always had the same issues, and things are easily arguably better today than at any other time.

Things like starvation around the world have been driven down 30% in a 10-year period. The difference between my parents generation and mine are staggering, and then from mine to the next even more so.

You have to look past the talking heads, past the headlines - those are designed to sound awful to gather attention and to frankly, piss people off.

To quote Men In Black, "there's always an Arquillian Battle Cruiser, or a Corillian Death Ray, or an intergalactic plague".
