This is my favorite track in this game. It's a song that feels so excited to start traveling, like it's begging you to climb somewhere difficult and high, and then take a long drink of the world below you.

Funny, 'cause I thought it was such a weird choice the first time I heard it.

It has a strong 80's vibe, so I was immediately attracted to it for that alone. I didn't recall having much nostalgia for the original track, "Dear to the Heart," and I still can't parse whether I didn't realize it or the synthwave here retroactively implanted it in my head.

Honestly, the original soundtrack wasn't my favorite Final Fantasy soundtrack. Usage of music in video games has improved so much since then, and there weren't many who knew what they were doing placing and looping music in games once composers started leaving chiptunes behind in the mid 90's and were producing longer tracks with more real-world sound. Rebirth's soundtrack is such an impressive project. The sheer size of it is colossal, and then they put dynamic music layering on top of a lot of it, even in quiet scenes. All the while, it somehow simultaneously fits the variety theme of the gameplay while evoking memories of the original game. Crazy.

I actually quite liked the melancholy of the original track. Walking the rail to Corel is actually one of my favorite parts of the original game. I'm not sure I could really explain why now, but it's right off the heels of something that happens earlier in the plot, and this moment always felt really introspective to me. Something about the party being split into the upper and lower railway lends to that feeling, too.

I still can't parse whether I didn't realize it or the synthwave here retroactively implanted it in my head.

Like it made you think of Dear to the Heart? They're definitely using the same family of notes. I feel like I can hear some connection between the two tracks, but it's so blended up, I don't think any part is really recognizable.

They really ought to be similar, though, because Rebirth's arrangement of Dear to the Heart is actually the theme for Costa del Sol's surrounding area. Mt. Corel directly follows it. I don't think I realized that song was still present in this part of the game until just now. I feel suddenly like it's no longer missing, haha.

Rebirth's soundtrack is such an impressive project.

I don't want to write too many paragraphs, but it really is. So much ear candy. That one, single pizzicato pluck in the middle of Let's Go gets me every time.

So much of this game is new and old at the same time. Even in Remake, I remember being so impressed that the battle system was so evolved and different but still so tightly bound to the spirit of the original's. It was sometimes like nothing had changed even though everything had.
