Generally, an artifact should be 100+ years old, but this is a flexible requirement if you find something rare and suitably linked to an era of history, not a strict rule. Anything over 100 is fair game regardless of rarity.

I know it's the leg armor laying against the waist armor but my first thought was: awwuh what a cute little samurai dude!
Real gold? Wouldn't that be incredibly heavy, and also useless in combat?
Gilded, so it's a very thin layer of gold. That being said, probably more a show piece than something one wishes to risk in combat. At the least, probably not something worn by anyone fighting on the front lines instead of commanding behind a safe wall of human shields.
