Are you from Oakland or nearby?
I am. And I fly in and out of OAK regularly. This is and was a bad location. I don't stop my car in that area except as required legally. Not all of Oakland is like this area, but let's not pretend it wasn't at least blight adjacent if not centrally located.
And Oakland is trying to figure out how to save money... And cutting the PD is part of the proposal. And the mayor... And... And.. It's a problem and Oakland needs help. But let's not pretend it's not suffering.
The area near the airport has been a lot quieter for at least the last six months. In addition to posting here I drive on Hegenberger or 98th Ave to get to/from work. I haven't seen anything bad in a while and often stop (only in the last few months). My coworker often goes to Hegenberger shops during lunch with no problems.
I'm under no illusion OPD/CHP solved the issue. They just focused a little on the area and also focused on the bipping crews reducing some of the brazen crime. The budget issues will not make things better.
