Menopause

'Menopause isn't really that bad'...said no woman ever.

For those who are approaching or experiencing 'the change' (think reverse puberty), a time where hormone levels decline either through the aging process or by medical/surgical means.

Menopause and Perimenopause (the transitional time before Menopause) are unique to every person, and while there's no one-size fits all, we support each other on this roller coaster ride of wacked out hormones, absurd mood swings and random sweaty hot flashes.

Be kind. Be respectful. We are all in this together!

Just a quick heads up, that r/menopause (on Reddit) has been re-opened for the time being. In the coming days, it will be 'restricted' instead of being private.

As an internet user of more than 25 years, and a redditor of more than 12 years, I think it is important to continue fostering this community on Lemmy. It is currently the only publicly-owned and operated social media platform and has exploded in growth in just the last few weeks. For those of you missing the wiki here, we are just waiting for a software update that will allow for larger posts (the wiki is huge!)

Personally, I believe strongly in having a healthcare-focused community that is free from advertising and corporate and pharmaceutical interests. I sincerely hope I am not alone in this belief.

I know some of you may want to return to reddit now that r/menopause is re-opened, but I implore you to consider the road ahead.

More updates to come.

I'm personally done with reddit but I'm sure others appreciate it. I have been wanting to find a new platform for awhile and it took the blackout to make thst happen. I will be here on lemmy moving forward.

Thank you for reopening the subreddit. It will make it easier to download posts I made containing valuable details about my menopause experience.

Also, a huge thank you in general, leftylibra, for the time an effort into creating and moderating this important .

I hope this will take off. I am glad the original sub is back up for now, but I think Reddit's days are numbered. Thanks for all you are doing for us.

Just wanted to thank you for sticking with both communities. Ladies need to stick together!

Thank you everyone for your positive comments! I know it's been a rough road, not just with social media changes...but THE change, and you're all super meno-warriors!

Thank you for the information. Can't wait to see this grow and in particular this community. I won't return to Reddit and I'm happy that I won't miss much. Thank you for being here.

Made it! Finally got past the spinning wheel of purgatory. Thanks for doing this. I’m not against people making money but I think it’s important to remember the big picture and not allow ourselves to be treated like pawns by people who don’t care for us and will take whatever they want from the community if it suits them.

[–] leftylibra 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes! Glad you made it and welcome!

Thank you!

I tend not to make rash decisions, but having seen the degradation of Reddit (rapidly recently) I was already considering alternatives. Glad one of my fav subs migrated over!

I've not nuked my Reddit account, but I'm out of it after porting all my bookmarks.

Same...we're going to try and get more r/menopause folk over here. We're glad you made the jump!

I’ll be here - thank you @leftylibra! (I don’t know how to tag ppl yet)

I just switched over to kbin to just see if doing this is easy. And yup it’s pretty easy to do either Lemmy or kbin. Also I only used google to sign into kbin. Warning though, it’s the Wild West of the internet with NSFW magazines/communities (kbin/Lemmy).

Hey @leftylibra!

First of all, I just really want to say thank you for all the work you're doing, both here and trying to deal with the reddit situation!

I just wanted to let you know, in case it comes up, right now, the beehaw instance (which I'm a member of) has defederated (is that the correct word?) with lemmy.world and at least one other instance. I can see the old posts here, but none that have occurred after the defederation.

I went ahead and joined .world to make sure I can stay in contact with this group, so no real problem on my end. I just wanted to let you know, just in case someone brings it up as an issue?

Again, thank you for everything!

[–] leftylibra 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks for sharing! We are aware of the beehaw situation. I know the mods are hopeful for a resolution once additional moderation tools are available on this platform. We are grateful that @[email protected] has kept user registration very open for the time being, to make the sign-up process easier for the thousands of redditors coming over.

As long as there's a community, I'm not planning to go anywhere--I'm really not interested in supporting yet another social media as$hole that doesn't care about the well-being of his users.

I just found this instance through this link and I'm super happy about it! I didn't even search for a sub, which is weird since I'd been on Reddit for over 12 years as well lol

I'm in full support of all alternatives and have been browsing the Fediverse since the blackout and I must say I really love it. I don't plan on going back to Reddit, the only thing I kinda miss is my local sub.

In any event, thank you very much for this instance. Subbed and will be reading :)

[–] leftylibra 3 points 1 year ago

That's cool to see! Thanks for sharing that.

I appreciate you leftylibra! You are definitely not alone in the kind of community you want to thrive here, looking forward to things to come!

[–] Daisychan 5 points 1 year ago

Late to the thread but Thank you leftylibra for all your hard work!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thank you, leftylibra, for the excellent info you've posted in r/menopause--which I've gotten so much from--and for taking the effort to restart things here. So glad for the community and that it will continue on in this more equitable platform!

[–] leftylibra 2 points 1 year ago

You're welcome! And thanks for coming over and for your support! I've been updating the Wiki with new info and links, etc. and hope it get it posted here soon. :)

I have said my final goodbye to reddit. What a shame. I had the "secret" figured out in finding the actual content over the shitposts/shitreplies. I learned so much there on a multitude of topics. I hate how often I'm checking facebook now. I tried to get into Tik Tok but I allow myself to watch one video about "my neighbor from hell" or "watch this Karen lose her mind" and that's all I get recommended for days, and then I start to feel like the world is a terrible place.

I'll be sticking it out here.

[–] leftylibra 7 points 1 year ago

My thoughts are that after July 1st, reddit will continue to degenerate, and become more like TikTok, etc. spamming us with ads and AI-generated content steering the narrative. In fact I think that's what happening now as reddit is forcibly removing mods and replacing them.

This platform is only going to grow and the numbers of new subscribers to lemmy over the last week has been incredible! Redditors are moving here en masse, so it's great to see.

If you haven't yet, have an explore around lemmy, you can see a list of subs/instances that have moved over and are growing!

I'm with you, leftylibra! Thank you for all you do!

Finally got into this yay!!!
