apple sucks generally but them walking back A LITERAL AND EXTRAJUDICIAL WIRETAP was a solid decision.
their announcement of the shit in the first place was what caused me to go through the hell that is moving out of the walled garden. been linux and grapheneOS and dumb watches ever since.

The proposed class action comes after Apple scrapped a controversial CSAM-scanning tool last fall that was supposed to significantly reduce CSAM spreading in its products. Apple defended its decision to kill the tool after dozens of digital rights groups raised concerns that the government could seek to use the functionality to illegally surveil Apple users for other reasons. Apple also was concerned that bad actors could use the functionality to exploit its users and sought to protect innocent users from false content flags.
Honestly, if they eat this $1.2B fee and chalk it up to standing up for user’s privacy, this is a massive win for them.
Why exactly is Apple responsible for this?
Should we also hold camera manufacturers responsible for the recording equipment used in child porn?
If the recording equipment came with a subscription to a cloud storage provider that automatically uploaded everything you record on it by default and they did not report it to the authorities. Yes, we should.
They can afford it, too.

Do they even have standing to sue? I see that suit getting dismissed the second it reaches a judge
If they use the tool they get sued. If they remove the tool, believe it or not, sued.
Yeah, the amount of resources capitalists waste on bullshit lawsuits is absurd.
It's like people don't realize the lawyers are the ones who always win, so they have a vested interest in convincing people to sue as often as possible.
This isn’t capitalists suing. It’s the intelligence community posing as victims.
