I've had many healthcare workers tell me they wouldn't even bother going out if they could only drink 2 glasses of wine.

A GP has told me the vast majority of alcoholic liver disease he sees are middle class couples sharing a bottle of wine between themselves most evenings.

European friends who come to England are always shocked at the drinking culture here.

The UK has a serious problem that politicians are unwilling to address because of the public backlash it gets.

Depending on what exactly you mean by "going out," I completely agree. I'm not going to a club or a bar for the company, we can go somewhere where I can actually interact with you if that's the goal.

I'm not really surprised -- a bottle of wine is ~9 units of alcohol, that's technically a binge for both, even if they go light. Doing that every day would smash your liver. People massively underestimate wine in every situation.

There has to be other factors involved. Genetics? Diet? Some underlying undetected health condition? I'm 54. I drink at least a couple of pints of beer every evening. Then I start a bottle of wine with dinner and it's gone by bed time. Been doing that for years. In fact my drinking habits are a lot better now than they were say 20 or 30 years ago. No health conditions that I know of - had a blood test recently. No high blood pressure: I average 120/80 and keep a close check on it. I do however eat fairly healthily: no junk food, very little processed sugar. Have a fairly big breakfast in the morning then a good home cooked meal at night. No lunch or supper or snacks. Everyone is different I guess. I reckon the only reason the recommended unit intake is so low is because nobody tells the truth when doctors ask them how much they drink. Perhaps its not the wine but the umpteen shots of Jager that she didn't tell the doc about.

Easy way to find out - get a liver test from your GP. Either way, excessive alcohol consumption is bad for you regardless: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/alcohol-advice/the-risks-of-drinking-too-much/

I don't drink to get drunk. I drink to take the edge of.

Sure alcohol consumption is bad for me. You know what's also bad? My mind without the edge taken off.

You just gotta do what you do to get through this life. There's a billion things out there that are trying to kill you. If a couple of beers and some wine get me through not thinking about that, then I'll take my chances.

If you wanna see my blood pressure go dangerously up, you should check me out without the edge taken off.

Your life mate, you do you. All I'll say is that if your life is that bad now consider how much worse it'll be with chronic liver failure or diabetes.

My life isn't bad. In fact it's quite good. All I'm saying is that there's something fucky with this story. Maybe there are other factors. It's like someone who gets sick from eating nothing but McDonalds and then blames it all on meat consumption.

Think about it. 31 year old "BBC journalist" and "social drinker" has fucked her liver because she does nothing that extraordinary. Yeah, fucking right! Bullshit. She's either a raging pisshead, a bullshitter, or has some underlying health condition that is not fitting into the agenda. Where's my headline? "54 year old man drinks heavily for most of his life and is not overweight, does not have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease or any signs of liver damage, feels pretty damn good and says alcohol has made him a better person."

I don't need it. It's a lifestyle choice. Some people choose Jesus which, in my opinion, is equally, if not more toxic.
