Sold my Genesis as a kid for Smash Bros. Now I have one again to replay my childhood games. (lemmy.world)

As a kid, I got my Dad to take me to Funcoland to trade in my Sega Genesis to buy Super Smash Bros for the N64. I kinda regret getting rid of it, but I played the heck out of Smash, and my Dad probably would have pawned it when I got older anyway, but I still missed my old Genesis. So I started looking to replace it.

I found a decently priced Genesis on eBay that came with a bundle of sports games I might never play, as well as a CIB copy of Sonic 2 at my local game shop. I ordered Road Rash 2 on eBay when I saw it was less than the market price. There's still a few more games to collect to rebuild my childhood library (even though some were just memorable rentals). I still need:

Sonic collection
True Lies
Road Rash 1 and 3
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Rocket Knight
Rock 'N Roll Racing

What other not-too-expensive games should I get?

I only ever played Triple Play on PC with a neighbor kid. And he waS soo much better than I was, it was never fun. But he always had a blast beating up on me lol.

But I recommend:

Dessert strike

Vector Man

Clay Fighters

Ren and Stimpy (parents should not have let me play that)

Earth Worm Jim

Toe Jam and Earl 1 and 2 ( the second one is the funkiest game I know of)

Man the 90s were sick

I had a SNES that generation, so my knowledge is a bit sparse but my two cents to try out would be:

Aladdin, Comix Zone and the Streets of Rage series.

Might be worth looking into getting some form of flash cart to load ROMs onto - especially for titles which are super expensive due to relative rarity!

Oh, I forgot that I have a Comix Zone cart on the way! I was thinking of getting an EverDrive for each system I have, but even though it's cheaper than collecting it's still expensive.

You can always just use a PC (or older handheld, like a PSP maybe?) as a stand-in emulator if an EverDrive is currently out of the question - although I think there’s something just right about playing on native hardware whenever possible.

There’s probably a whole swathe of JRPGs I’ve never even heard of that you could experience too (if that’s your thing) - but those tend to be pricey.

I already have a handful of devices I could emulate on, but it's not the same as playing on original hardware through a CRT TV.
