Yeah that part really paints the picture of a civilized, honorable society based on justice and tradition.

Not to diminish the injustice of this state sanctioned violence and desecration, but the wikipedia sources indicate he was was at least dead when he was flayed.

Yeah, but it’s inhuman and fuckin psychotic to make trophies out of his body parts. But…these are slavers we’re talking about. So they were already inhuman, nothing else should surprise us.

Just as a note, this is why the Second Amendment actually existed. The founders didn't believe militias would be a sufficient check to federal power so much as the Southern states wanted local forces capable of putting down slave revolts on short notice.
There's probably something you could also say about the concept applying to original idea taken from the Roman Republic concept of the citizen-soldier.
