June 17, 2023

I had some time this morning, so I took my Parker to a Shapton 12k and refreshed the edge. I'm not sure if I did things right, but I got a nice smooth shave out of it. We'll see how well this edge holds up.

I'm less satisfied with my choice of lather; this was far less refreshing than my previous shaves with Marduk or Le Grand Chypre.

Have a nice day!

  • Lather: Proraso Green Soap
  • Brush: AP Shave Co G5C 24mm
  • Razor: Lord 1822L
  • Blade: ASCO Platinum (4)

This is the Lord razor also called the L6, not the one with a Tech style head (which I prefer). This razor was still able to give me a close shave but it was not that comfortable to me. I even got a single nick which I haven't had in quite a while.

The blade is still going strong on shave 4, Proraso is Proraso and the G5C knot is excellent.

A Saturday morning of teaching aerial yoga awaits so I'm keeping the scents mellow. The wife left for London last night so I'm looking forward to using the super stanky stuff that she can't stand when Monday arrives.

The black coffee is piping hot and doing its job of waking my ass up on this rainy morning. Have a great day all!

Jun 17, 2023 - 88 Chestnut/ Nordost

I killed the sample of 88 Chestnut, and I was reminded that it is such a great scent. I followed it up with another scent masterpiece, Nordost.

What a great late morning shave! Have a great day!

6/17/23

Going to go do a little side work this morning. Kryptonite really fits the bill for a sunny and warm Saturday. The lime in it is super well done, and combined with the woodsy notes it has a real summer vibe to it.

When I first got in to straights and was trying to figure everything out and what I like, I'd seen Thiers Issards and thought "you'd have to be crazy to spend that on a razor". Oh man, how things have changed! Getting this one was definitely a milestone in my wetshaving journey, so it has a special spot in my den. It's also a very nice shaver, so that certainly helps. Very nice shave this morning.

“you’d have to be crazy to spend that on a razor”

lol! I felt that way when I bought my TI Le Grelot. Now I'm looking at a Tanifuji that costs four times as much. Naturally, I need another razor :)

  • Brush: AP Shave Co. - 24mm 2Bed Synthetic
  • Razor: Chiseled Face Legacy - Raw Titanium (#69)
  • Blade: Personna Platinum Chrome (1)
  • Lather: Barrister & Mann/Zingari Man - Nocturne - Soap
  • Post Shave: Barrister & Mann - Lyssa - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Stirling - Varen - Balm

Darn - I was excited that I managed to get my soap collection down to 40, but apparently this soap wasn't on my list. I had overlooked it somehow, so now I'm back to having 41 soaps. That's life.

Nice shave, great shave, excellent shave. Really good. I'll note this razor/blade combo for future reference.

2023.06.17 SOTN:

  • Prep: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Cleanser

  • Brush: AKA Brushworks Amethyst Watchman with 26mm AP Shave Co G5C

  • Razor: Henson AL13(+++)

  • Blade: Gillette Perma-Sharp (3)

  • Lather: Seaforth! Sea Ice Lime

  • Post Shave: Stirling Mentholated Unscented Witch Hazel and Aloe, Seaforth! Sea Ice Lime Aftershave Splash, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream Extra-Dry

I postponed shaving a couple of days because my new Henson arrived today. I've been using the mild (+) version for about 5 months or so (around 50 shaves), so I decided to buy the aggressive (+++) model to try out. Have to say, my initial impressions are that I enjoy it more than the mild version. I used SIL because I know it is a great lather and would make it easy to judge the shave based off of the razor. I still have some problem areas on my jawline, but that's always been the case. This was one of the smoothest shaves on my neck I've had, so that alone is a big point in favor for the aggressive. Time will tell, obviously, but as it stands right now the mild will probably be going to the bazaar.

Edit for Lemmy: would've posted this from kbin, but for some reason the federation isn't quite synced right. Oh well.

problem jawline

Same with me.

[–] bmac92 2 points 1 year ago

At this point I just live with it. Slowly trying to get better at it, but the last time I actually got it done well I ended up with a few ingrown hairs. So for now I'm just leaving it not quite as smooth.

  • Brush: Parker Faux Horn 22mm Silvertip
  • Razor: Smart Helix Apollo (setting: 0.5 Plate)
  • Blade: Personna Lab Blue (4)
  • Lather: Spearhead Shaving Company - Seaforth! Sea Spice Lime - Soap
  • Post Shave: Thayers - Lemon - Toner
  • Post Shave: Spearhead Shaving Company - Seaforth! Sea Spice Lime - Aftershave

3 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

I haven't used SSL since last September. Very nice to bring it out again. An absolutely wonderful scent.

And this little Parker brush gets very little use. It is the first brush I bought when I decided to move back to a DE, brush and soap. It's very inexpensive, and it loses hairs with each use, but boy does it perform.

The Smart Helix Apollo differs from the Apollo Light in that it comes with a two-sided plate that provides either 0.5mm or 0.85mm gap. The Light comes with two plates, one with less blade exposure than the other. The Apollo is a little heavier than the Apollo Light because of this, and perhaps other weight-saving measures. That doesn't bother me a bit. This is one of my favorite DEs.

A postponed Fougère Friday.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What do you think of Bon Monsieur? [ Also, love the Skin Bracer. Very old school. ]

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's not my favorite Rogue scent, but it's a well-crafted fougère, and it worked well in a shave soap form. I'll enjoy killing my sample.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thanks! I have Mousse Illuminée which I like a lot. Not sure I want another scent in the fougère family atm.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Mousse Illuminée is my favorite Rogue perfume, though I haven't tried the new pine forest scent.

  • Lather: Sir Irisch Moos
  • Brush: Zenith B33
  • Razor: EldrormR Industries - MM24
  • Blade: GEM - PTFE (1 & 2)
  • Post Shave: Thayer’s - Witch Hazel Aloe Vera Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co. - Unscented - Splash & Balm
  • Scuttle: [Redacted] - Travel Scuttle
  • Osma: Osma - Osma

I’m away at a destination wedding, and instead of continuing my exploration of my DEs, I took the tried and true MM24. Such a great daily driver, it always gives me a great shave with little if any irritation.

The town we are in has a crazily well stocked independent grocery store. They had Thayer’s aftershave splash, which I had never seen before, so I decided to try it. It’s an alcohol based splash, and is not amazing nor terrible. The scent is a generic, inoffensive musky scent. I’d say it reminded me of Stirling’s aftershaves more than anything else. That’s not a criticism of Stirling or Thayer’s, they are both basic, serviceable splashes and I like that. But I see no reason to buy this again as I have Stirling.

June 17, 2023 – Pink Floyd Family Reunion

  • Brush: DS Cosmetic KenSurfs Limited Edition Tuxedo 24mm
  • Razor: Timeless Titanium Slim
  • Blade: Durablade Sharp Titanium (5)
  • Lather: DentonMajik – Pink Floyd
  • Post Shave: DentonMajik – Pink Floyd

What?!?! Gilmour and Waters buried the hatchet??? Say it isn’t so!!

Alright. It isn’t so. But it is time for Mrs_Donut’s family reunion; the 67th consecutive iteration since official records have been kept, with the first gathering dating back nearly 80 years. Quite impressive, if you ask me.

Pink Floyd is the choix du jour. It’s a nice copy of Pinaud Clubman Musk and a fitting reminder of the barbershop of my youth.

Happy Saturday and happy shaving!
