I think it's more about maintaining superiority as the unilateral world superpower. Can't let anyone else come into a position to threaten western hegemony. The military industrial complex profits are just the icing on the cake.

Malaysia is insignificant as far as technological and economic powers go.
Singapore are bankers and will say what is prudent. And certainly don't mind some draconian authoritarianism.
