Fediverse vs Disinformation

541 readers
83 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

This "fact checking" service seems a little off.

Biden boasted that “inflation [is] down, way down, and continuing to go down.” Growth in inflation has been steadily declining from its peak of 9.1% for the 12 months ending in June 2022, but overall, it is still up 19.4% since the start of Biden’s presidency.

Using mixed numbers, starting with inflation growth and ending with total overall inflation since a certain date in the same comparison. Neither of these figures addresses the current inflation rate or its degree of movement.

Biden boasted that “border encounters have dropped over 50%” and that “there are fewer border crossings today than when Donald Trump left office.” Apprehensions of those trying to cross the southern border illegally plummeted in July, but illegal border crossings skyrocketed for most of Biden’s presidency.

This is not a failed fact check. Biden's language is not referring to most of his Presidency, but today, where they have dropped 50%.

I'm sure there were probably more, but I'm done reading that. It does not actually appear to hold itself to any sort of rigorous standard.

That makes sense. We should have ChatGPT fact check it for us. lol

Yeah it's not their best work. I'm wondering if they just rushed this out too quickly.

The article stated that Trump never threatened to cut social security and medicaire, but he gave at least one interview where he specifically said he's open to it and has promoted changes that would hasten their demise. He's even supported people pushing an end to "entitlement" programs, as they like to call them

"entitlement" programs, as they like to call them

That is what they're called.

The "as they like to call them" implies that it isn't an accurate term

That's fair, "they" is rather nebulous
