MODERATORS

Hello all!

I've got a few things to announce.

We've grown by over 200 users since May 30. That's about 28 users/day, which is huge compared to what it's been before that. I'm very happy to see the increased activity, and hope this place (and lemmy/the fediverse in general) will become the goto spot for social interactions and link sharing. I'm excited for what the future will bring! Also thanks to many of you for making me laugh in your registration applications.

As this server grows, I think it would be a good idea to have some admins (I'm thinking 2 to start), to help with approving new user registrations, and dealing with Reports. Ideally, I'd like to leave most reports up to the community moderators, but for things that go against the site-wide rules, I'd like to have a team of 3 so we can deal with these things as a group. I haven't fully decided on how I will pick the admins, but I will make another post when I'm ready to do that.

I've thought about a new logo for lemmy.ca. Are there any graphic designers here that would like to create a new logo? I don't really have anything in mind other than something to do with Canada, obviously.

Lastly, since some users have asked, I've setup two places where users can donate to support the server. The monthly costs to run the server is currently around $25 CAD/month, which includes weekly backups (which I may change to daily). Anyways, donations are completely optional, but greatly appreciated! They can be made here:

https://liberapay.com/lemmy.ca/
https://opencollective.com/lemmy-ca

I'll add those links to the main sidebar as well.

If you have any feedback for anything above, let me know!

Thank you for having us! Looking forward to learning more about the community and how to navigate. Will be a little bit of a learning curve, was previously a Redditor for 12 years. Feels like a fresh start and great vibes in the community. Thanks @smorks.

I think the logo should involve a beaver, keep the rodent theme from Lemmy but canadianized

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Beavers are in the same order as lemmings (rodentia) and somewhat Canadian related. Maybe a beaver themed logo?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It is a national animal of Canada. I would say that a beaver is very fitting :)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

i agree, i like the idea of a beaver. or even a beaver tail or something along those lines. i could try and whip something up but i'm pretty terrible a design-related stuff, haha.

Here's my donation.

Just a couple concepts, hopefully someone improves on this. I personally like the simplicity of the current logo myself but I can understand the desire to change it.

I like your first one, just without the maple leaf. Just my opinion.

A beaver would be great, I could give it a try! Beavers, Lemmings, Otters, I love them all lol

I tried to make an account on Lemmy.ca but I wasn't able to log in. Are you guys still dealing with server issues? I've been stuck on the log in page for a few days now. If I inspect in the console, it seems to be spamming 'createPostLike' and the such but that might not be relevant.

weird. i can see your account, it looks like everything is good with it. it could be that we are/were overloaded when you were trying to login?

and feel free! it would be much appreciated!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh ok that is odd, I'm still getting the loading icon that spins forever

My best guess is that you are/were overloaded since it's happening across different browsers too. I guess I will just wait for those new performance upgrades then :)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i just tried logging on in an incognito window and had no problems. that's really strange. have you tried resetting your password (assuming you have an e-mail setup?)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Oh that was it! I just assumed it was loading forever, but resetting my password fixed it. Not sure what happened there, but I was able to log in now and post from the account

Just joined up. Pretty sad to see what's happening to Reddit. Don't know if can stand the place anymore if I can't use Sync. Hope this place will be able to take its place.

I'm hoping to get the hockey community more active:

https://lemmy.ca/c/hockey

[email protected]

If it becomes viable I'll definitely make regular donations to support it.

Can we arbitrarily create groups like subreddits? I think a great way to start off would just be to mirror some of the locality-based subreddits. I see that we have some for the provinces (but why "nova_scotia_general"?). My primary local subreddit was /r/Halifax and I think that is what most Haligonians would look for if and when they come here.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

yes! anybody can create communities (subreddits).

another useful tool is the Lemmy Community Browser: https://browse.feddit.de/ which searches multiple instances for communities.

and there appears to be a halifax community created already? ([email protected])

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh, well somebody beat me to it. Thanks!

Hey this place looks to be picking up steam. Get ready for more activity tomorrow, there is a post or two going up potentially about r/Ontario joining the blackout

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Maybe post something in that thread that links to [email protected] and crosspost the r/Ontario post here. That way people looking for something to read or write during the blackout will know where to go.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I setup a recurring donation with Liberapay. Let's see how crazy this gets.

Put up a money support link in the signup page as well as other prominent places. You may have to move to a bigger server instance depending on how this goes.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Hi. I knew lemmy existed for some times but seeing where reddit is going seems bleak. I like the idea of fediverse.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I am one of the new ones, thanks for having me and for hosting.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Just created the [email protected] and [email protected] communities for fellow enthusiasts, come join in!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Happy to see the place grow! Hope the new server is coping well, 😃.

I imagine you'll have an even larger flood of users next Monday. Are user approvals required, or can they be automated?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

they are basically only on because we fairly regularly got spammers/trolls, and the approvals have essentially stopped that completely. also, lemmy.ml was blocking instances that had open registrations (not sure if they still are?)

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Blocks are manual and we dont have time to go through all the instances to check for open registrations. We block instances if there are lots of trolls or other unwanted content.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's gonna get tricky with any significant flood of users from Reddit.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

agreed. i may open up registrations depending on how bad it gets.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It might be worth at least crowd sourcing it… have a few members indicate whether they think the applicant is human or a GPT instance, and then just look at those decisions to make the final call in batches. Takes some of the load off you, but still filters out the worst of the bots.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Maybe make a questionnaire that indicates pass/fail for applications? There are some standard psychology tests for psychopathic behavior for example. Maybe fail those. 😂

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Thank you for all your hard work. I am considering moving to monero.house in future just because i think it would allign more directly with my interests, but we shall see. Their methods of screening out bots are interesting as you can either ask to join via twitter/reddit account with history or pay 0.01XMR and give the transaction ID

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

What would the equivalent of that second one be for here? Prove mastery of the sarcastic and honest apologies? Birth certificate or passport?
