We've had it in the US forever, at least since the 80s. The last time I cashed a paycheck that wasn't from a temp agency or some other temporary work was probably a call center job I had back in 2004 when I was making ends meet finishing college. I had mine electronically deposited in the 90s in the Navy.
I think it's just a joke that no one gets a physical paycheck anymore.
