Crystal Legacy and Yellow legacy are hacks that both try to keep the spirit of the original release while fixing things like qol and balance.

Gaia is a good one. Unbound. Radical red. Firered rocket edition is a fun one to start with
Radical red is a real tough start. I'd pass over that one unless you're a masochist
I recently beat Firered as my first introduction to rom hacks and I would 100% agree it’s a great place to start! I’m about 20 hours into unbound now and WOW there’s so many QOL changes that make it such a great experience. Would recommend both, and thank you for the extra rom hacks to try out after I finish unbound!
What do you mean by "vanilla"? Like, one of the official games just updated with QoL features? Honestly, you can just compile the Emerald Expansion with whatever features you want and play that.
I believe this is the GitHub page for it. It seems really neat.
This is NOT a standalone romhack, and as such, most features will be unavailable and/or unbalanced if played as is.
Do you know of some ROM hacks that utilize it? I feel like if I were try to make adjustments myself I'd spend longer tinkering than playing the game.
