This nation of cowboys and the philosophically cowardly just couldn't handle the little Irish woman with the voice five times her size—not even that 20^th^ century "cultural icon," Madonna Ciccone—and Sinéad (or her management) just didn't factor in the consequences. She was a pop singer, not a politician. Bulldozers in Times Square, indeed.
