Am I reading this right? The RX 7800 XT will have fewer compute units and stream processors than the 6800 XT, and the same memory size and bus width? Its specs look a lot like the plain old 6800, which was released in 2020.

I wanted a new current gen gpu but it looks like the used market is still in the running when I upgrade this fall. Hopefully, upcoming real performance reviews and pricing make a compelling case.
We've seen something similar before, with for instance Radeon RX 6600XT, there was still a decent performance bump, although it looked kind of worse on paper than the predecessor.
Seems like AMD is trying to get more profitable with GPU through smaller dies with higher efficiency?
AMD might already showcase Radeon RX 7800/7700 at Gamescom AMD is reportedly targeting a September release
Already??? These were rumored to come out by July as late as in may.

That's a delay of 9 months to release mainstream products for a new product-line. I know the new manufacturing process takes a long time to get up and running from tape-out, but 9 months delay is a bit much IMO, It's like they are old already when launching.
It's possible that they have been deliberately delaying, to help clear last-generation stock.
