All about dogs - dog breeds, dog training and behavior, news affecting dog owners or handlers, puppy pics, etc.

Rules (Will be refined later on).

  1. Don't be a dick. This should cover most things, just keep in mind that everyone started somewhere and try to be helpful rather than rude or judgmental.

  2. No personal attacks based on training style or tools.
Discussion of balanced training including proper use of aversives is allowed here.

  3. All breeds and mixes are welcome. You can criticize backyard breeding practices but don't pile on people because they own a specific breed or prefer purebreds or mixed breeds.

  4. Do not support backyard breeders or puppy mills. Please do not link to or suggest buying from high volume breeders or those with an obvious lack of standards and testing.

  5. Do not help or support fake service animals. Please do not encourage people to buy fake service dog vest or ESA letters to get around rental or other restrictions & do not give advice on how to misrepresent a dog as a service or support animal.

Obligatory PSA, please put restraints on your dogs in cars to keep them safe.

To keep yourself safe too. Anything loose in the car becomes a projectile during a crash.

So your mom is a projectile?

I couldn't resist.

😡 take it back right now

Instructions unclear, restrained my dog in a safe and commanded him to drive my car

Does anyone have any recommendations on decent restraints for a large dog? We usually use a 'seatbelt' thing but I'm not sure if it's the best option.

Mine aren’t big, so I don’t know if this is helpful, but we use a harness that has a little clip that clips into the seatbelt. It’s pretty secure, they get a bit of leeway, but it will secure them in an accident enough not to turn into a missile.

safer but lets face it. the moment your taking a motor vehicle you greatly increased your unsafe condition and the restraint is a drop in a bucket at that point..

That’s a load of bullshit.

Modern vehicles are exceptionally safe when operated responsibly. Safety restraints and safety equipment have come a long way, as long as you’re wearing them.

However an unrestrained body in a vehicle becomes a projectile.

In the USA this is one of the reasons why it is easily constitutional to have laws requiring the use of seatbelts, because your unrestrained body isn’t just your problem.

Modern vehicles are exceptionally safe when operated responsibly.

And also when everyone around you using one is also doing so responsibly. Which, let's be honest, is not reasonable to assume.

Yeah but even these days vehicles are designed with that in mind.

It’s truly awe inspiring what you can walk away from these days.

That depends a lot on the vehicle. If you're in something small like a sedan, you might as well be on a bike for all the protection it'll provide from a collision with an SUV or pickup truck

If you look at it like you are which is being safer than before. This article outlays more what im talking about https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/car-accidents-cause-death-injury-trauma-why-do-we-shrug-ncna1282193

Owning a dog really is like this. They do something kind of awkward or annoying so you buy some solution to try to correct it and they do something even more weird with that solution.

I mean it's funny, but just buy a seat belt adapter to clip them in. Everyone will be safer

What a majestic creature

The struggle is real.
