I've seen many posts like "70% of us not gamers, we're testers". It is well known tendency. While I can't fully relate to this, I have a tendency that i'm not as interested in gaming as I used to be. While it quite normal, I'm willing to be sucked up by a game, but it has become harder.

For me(32y) it is sounds just sad. I started to play since my parents bought me Dreamcast back in 2000 year in Russia. After that, four of my friends and brothers become infected by it and bought Dreamcast. It was wild to play in such console, winter, Siberia, pure magic on your TV, something like Shenmue or Sonic Adventure 2 was captivating like another boundless world. Then I got PC and so on. I won't write my whole gaming history here. Just wanted to add a bit emotions and nostalgia into it.

After that were many games, I ended up with multiplayer ones. With steam deck I've done some cinematic games like Life is strange, stray.. but I'm struggling with solo gaming now.

What keeps you into gaming? Do you have some hacks or approaches to deal with it? I don't want to play in steam store, I would feel myself miserable because of it. It looks like a contemporary form of hoarding. For example, my brother has around 1000+ games, and he doesn't look much happy with it judging from what he says. I don't have something against this, just not my thing.

I have some personal approaches. For solo, I got used to finding something with strong story and many dialogues. Though i don't play much, I like competitive games like Rainbow Six siege or Overwatch. And the reason why i every evening play in steam deck is Moira. Yes Moira character in overwatch, she fits to steam deck gamepad ideally. You needn't much aim but a lot of tactics and there is escape and healing for any moment, very forgivable character that let you be effective and even a bit competitive. And if there was no moira i couldn't imagine what I would play then. Maybe I should get into docking and play via mouse/keyboard. I'm still find it interesting that one particular character keeps me into gaming. I wish there were more games, character like this to me. So, does someone have something like this?

There is also gaming industry that i think became worse because of marketing, buisness wants to interfere with the creative process. Seems like buisness has greater impact than it was back in old days when skill was more valued, it was not just high paid work in IT. I guess those guys were kind of wizards of that time in gamedev. I don't know though.

Hyrr0: I recently installed emudeck and found myself really enjoying old school games. Actual AAA are often the same pattern : action RPG adventure with some narrative. They’re often disappointing and poorly optimized and even cost a lot for the little enjoyment …

ROMs are free. Emulators too. And there is a huge backlog of well known titles that are just awaiting us.

I’m also in my thirties. Maybe that’s just because we have known something different and this industry has changed a lot. It’s more about consuming and paying than creating something different. It’s like Netflix for cinema… better having a lot of crappy things than a little of quality. Sad but true.

Village_Wide: I agree, it is not only in gaming industry though, it is main consuming trend. I hope it couldn't be much worse. Nevertheless we are have big library of games and it up to us if we want play in it all.

I played Grandia 2 but lost my all savings. I defenetiley should try it again.

ma_er233: I just try things out and hope something can hook my interest. Last time I got really invested into a game was Persona 5. Never thought I could get into JRPG. Had a pretty good time.

deathblade200: don't get games just because people hype them up. that is a sure way to make yourself not care about games. I've hated most newer games thats people have hyped up. I just play games that actually interest me and not just because they are popular or AAA or some other dumb shit. currently I am addicted to Sekiro and then plan to move onto the Nioh series.

Ship00pi: I focus on “fun” if I am not having fun. I won’t play. I used to play games for the challenge. Cranking the difficulty etc.

These days I play on Easy and just enjoy the ride :)

Also for someone who is in the same age as you. We played through the best years of video games imo. Today it’s pretty much the same thing only with better textures and worse story. This really takes away from many new games released as my brain automatically pops up a memory from the same game only better, I played a decade ago.

AjSuuh: I have to take breaks with another hobby, if I play too much drums or read too much I crave something else to do. It’s hard to do so much of just one thing before your mind needs another practice to work on. I usually rotate between the three. That keeps it healthy for me.

MalevolentDisciple: biggest tip i can give is stay away from two types of games: Big AAA recycled content, devoid of soul games that are a waste of time and only exist to siphon money and flavour of the month games UNLESS you are actually interested in them.

These are two big traps that people like yourself fall into where their only exposure to gaming is bad games or games they dont like. No wonder you dont like gaming anymore!

Check out older titles, check out indie games, check out games from genres you actually love instead of feeling the need to buy the newest call of duty slop.

Now this also doesnt mean every AAA game is bad, there are some banger games out there still made with passion from its developers, namely from software, insomniac and naughty dog off the top of my head.

Two games ive been loving recently on my steam deck is A indie poker deck builder called Balatro and Telltales the walking dead series.

Village_Wide: Yes, you exactly right. I got used to play in AAA titles and AA i guess. I'm not into indie gaming. Yes now I understand why my brother like indie games so much, there is more of a free will in making games for developers.

Yes, that is a trap, a good insight. Although I kind of know that but do nothing about it. Will think again and hope to find something new, thanks 🙏

RecommendationOld677: Why force yourself to like something just because you liked it as a kid?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

Village_Wide: Fair point, but it is not only because of it. I think to be intrested in something you should work on it. When I started read original Harry Potter two years ago it was tough, sometimes kind of boring because i did not fully understand whole plot. Now i'm going through sixth book and my interest has grown from mainly learning purposes into pleasing reading process when i like it itself. The same happening with games. I was absolutely thrilled by Sabnautica, Stray, Outer wilds. Persona 5 also quite interesting game although it looks like made for teens or young adults. I've been seeing how some of my pers could play only GTA and maybe some fightnings but notrhing more. And to me it seems that some of them just did not want to get through an entry threeshold. I think that sometimes there is required effort and thinking how to get into something even if a main purpose to just intertain yourself in specific way.

Joseramonllorente: I hated indie games for not having incredible grafics. Now i mostly play indie games because they are fun and make me happy. AAA games are only bought at incredible discounts many years after they are released. No online games, only cooperative games. That’s what make me happy again with gaming.

ZedErre: I use games, like many others I'm sure, to escape my shitty and stressful life.

One thing that helps is I've always been and still am mainly a single player games kind of guy, and I pay close attention to the story so I have an incentive to keep playing.

There's also the fact that not being able to afford a lot of games is kind of a blessing and a curse because when I do get a game I'm guaranteed to play it and I often have one narrative game installed at a time.

Exiled_WistZz: I play games when I feel like it. When I don't, I don't. I'm in my early 30's and spend a decent amount of time reading, listening to music & volunteering. I do some gaming maybe once or twice a week. Sometimes I'm in the mood for it and other times I'm not -- if I'm not feeling it then I don't force it out of habit anymore.

EnzoGSilvestre: Something I did for a lot of the grindier games is download a 100% save file on new game plus since I’m much busier.

Now I don’t have to worry about being a certain level or grinding to get the best weapons. I can just enjoy the story. A lot of new triple a games can be overwhelming in terms of new gameplay mechanics. I’d stay away from souls like games like Eldon ring. Any game that has a big learning curve.

But you also run the risk of feeling like you’re cheating, or not even bothering doing the side quests because you already have the loot from said quest.

TLDR: download a completed save file and play the game to enjoy the story but you may only play that game for 20 minutes after you finish the story.

Don’t know if this answered your question but I tried.

bren680: I'm here for answers too. Mine is sorta the opposite where I only played various genres though all in the competitive multiplayer space.

My single player backlog kept growing and now I moved back to my home country which doesn't exactly have the capability to reproduce my experience online when I was in North America.

Haven't read all the answers yet but I've gathered that this is a growing thing with a lot of gamer adults.

I defs need new hobbies but I used to LOVE gaming, ya know?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

frost_add: First: AAA games are mostly dead, killed by corporate greed. There are exceptions in this space but they are few and far between. Most AAAs are just rehashing old content and ideas, and add obligatory stuff nobody wants, like day-0 DLC that ships with the game, micro transactions and always-online DRM …

What I found to be still enjoyable are 1) indie games 2) pure retro stuff (emulation) 3) remakes of retro games

There’s no good answer for everyone. Sometimes the right thing to do might just be to give up gaming for a while.

pedralm: As we get older we inevitably get gaming saturation (I'm 41).

For one, we have seen and played all genres and reiterations of those genres to exhaustion. They don't feel surprising or captivating. It's the same thing with another wrap. Innovation, risk and experience are getting more rare, especially with the rise of mega corporations that amass many studios and choke them out of creativity for the sake of playing safe for the business. This is where Indies come in with refreshing ideas and willing to take risks. It feels incredibly boring at my age to see another open world where most of the time is catch this, kill that, then just walk back and forth 75% of the time, boring writing altogether.

On the other hand, gaming is not as important or necessary with age. You have more stuff going on to attend to and can't just dedicate a lot of hours of your daily life to a game. This will also break some engagement with the game and keep interrupting your interest. Steam deck helps a lot with this because it facilitates access to your games.

Doesn't help that with time I have played a ton of games since the 80s and have still hundreds in the backlog of my steam library, most of them I suffer through because they're just... not captivating. So I "play test" I'd say more than 75% of them these days, and many others I play through to 75% of the game and then move to another. Some games are just too long for someone that plays one or two hours a day. Every game I consider starting, first thing I do is check howlongtobeat.com. and I am an RPG lover so my games of choice used to take 50-100 hours. Loved that journey. But that to me is like one full year of gaming at times.

So... Find something that you believe is compelling and actually keeps you engaged and is a good use of your time. I personally share this struggle.
