I know that I’m a week late as I have had my deck since last Wednesday but I really wanted to get a good handle on most of what it could do before I gushed about it.

I have been playing video games since I was 3 or 4. My first memory of one was being at sears with my mother and late father and they picked up a Super Nintendo that came with Mario Paint. I had a blast with that thing and everything I got to play on it.

I’ve had the NES, genesis, n64, many a gameboy from the original to the pocket to the color to both advanced/sp, the ds lite, ps1, ps2, xbox 360 and the last one being the wii. We don’t talk about the wii anymore. I’m ok with that lol.

When I first held a friend’s lcd deck, it immediately felt like the most comfortable thing I have ever held in my hands. It was so nice to hold. I tried portal thinking ya know, l’ll put it down in a few minutes cause I could never get into it. An hour later and everyone still playing the board game they were playing and the deck would not let me put it down. I have never enjoyed playing portal. I know others have but I never did. Dear god the controls, the trackpad oh god the trackpad and the screen. Everything just begged me to keep playing. I couldn’t stop enjoying myself.

Now I have my own 1tb oled deck with several accessories, almost all of which were somehow on sale before my deck arrived. I am addicted to using this thing. Playing games just to see if and how they run, tweaking performance and playing with deckyloader.

I am still figuring out emulation and will one day succeed at learning how to get my custom boot animation to not auto delete lol, but I am ridiculously satisfied with my purchase. I’m hoping to make a list of things I found for folks that are looking for a reference for things that weren’t obvious or didn’t necessarily have an easy search option. Like, I had no idea you needed to enable steam input to allow custom or community controller layouts. I just thought you simply selected and were good to go. Haven’t figured out how to delete a downloaded layout yet.

My current addictions are sonic frontiers now that I figured out how to get a good and solid frame rate but also slay the spire may be the easiest game I’ve picked up since the nes and snes days lol. Never have I enjoyed failing so much and climbing back up that damn spire!

Tetris effect in hdr is so jaw droppingly gorgeous I can’t even explain it! Spyro runs fairly well at medium and if I don’t mind 30fps, I can go all the way to ultra which is insane!

Having mega man battle network has brought me back to middle school and I gotta say I almost teared up a bit. Also, having a color profile that brings out more contrast in those collections is incredible!

I look forward to unlocking more of my deck’s true potential as I learn more and more. Of course now I am gonna try figuring out how to get surfshark to work so I can use it for stuff in desktop mode.

Overall, ridiculously happy. If you are deciding between anti glare vs glossy, don’t even worry about it. Pick which one you feel you want more. The antiglare screen looks just as nice as the glossy oleds I’m used to.

Happy to be part of the deck gang and looking forward to playing stuff I never felt inclined to play before and enjoy stuff I did even more.

greedy-banana-packer: Ha! I love the deck. I have a ps5 and an oled tv, I could play cyberpunk in all it's glory at 60fps there but I choose to play on the deck because it's so easy to just suspend and pick up and play

I too love tinkering but I try not to tinker to the point it ruins the gaming experience, but it's fun to knock a few settings up or down to get a performance you are personally happy with

Console player myself, still haven't a clue how to get emulaution running, but that's okay maybe one day I'll get it working lol

I only have the LCD steam deck, but I know how good oled is since I have an oled tv so I'm Abit jealous

Not to mention the much better battery and improved refresh rate of the oled model.....makes me want to bite the bullet and go for the oled but,.......I'm quite happy with the LCD....for now .....even though the blacks are more a grey fog lol

megas88: I will say this. Don’t sweat having an lcd if the 90htz refresh rate is what draws your eye. When it applies, holy shit is it amazing but I have MAYBE 5 games that actually support it not counting the entire genesis collection as individual games. So don’t worry about not having that particular feature. It’s surprising how some games I absolutely would expect to run at 90fps, just don’t. Like freedom planet 2 runs flawlessly at 90fps but the first game is capped at 60.

As for tweaking? I messed with a different version of proton for the first time today to fix this extreme oversaturation on crosscode since I decided to see how it ran. 90fps and glorious but the thing about running it on an oled deck is that the version of proton is applying an hdr profile on an unsupported game from what I can tell. Running it on proton 7 seems to completely fix it. No complaints.

I will say all the other improvements the oled has are very noticeable. The better wifi, the more stable Bluetooth connections, the significantly more responsive touch screen, and the noise level of the fan are all better than what I’ve seen from the lcd deck.

That said, the lcd model is still an absolute wonderful device and if I had gone with it, I wouldn’t necessarily be willing to part with it because the experience on the deck is just that good. It’s just the oled with all its here and there improvements add up to an even nicer experience. I’m personally just happy they exist at all. Can’t wait to see what the future for the hardware and software holds. Maybe there will be a timeline where Ubisoft takes me out to dinner before bending me over to try and play Scott Pilgrim 😂

moustachtic: The set up for PS5 remote play is stupid simple to set up and works inedibly well.

greedy-banana-packer: Well I wouldn't want to play PS5 remote play on my steam deck. One, i have an oled tv, lol and I love it, and two, I don't like the input lag that comes with remote play, as good as it may be these days it's still there

Remote play is not appealing to me whatsoever

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

tappthegreattt: I thought same having just bought the s89c 77 inch… but it’s the fact I can play some of the back log ps5 games that I know I would never sit down and devote time to. Being able to remote play and actually chip away at Ratchet and clank or returnal is great cause I’m too busy with counter strike / FF7 remake .

Tough-Yam5520: EmuDeck makes it very easy to get started, but I recommend trying to get it working yourself on your main PC first. That way you can go into it with a little bit more knowledge. There's nothing more satisfying than taking a game off your shelf, dumping it, and loading it onto your Steam Deck.

headbanger1186: It's the bed handheld I've owned since the OG Vita imo. Love this damn thing.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

Working_Doubles: You don't only have to use it in the bed by the way!

MCA2142: >We don’t talk about the wii anymore

Wii and the Wii U were both awesome. I even used the Wii U gamepad for steam remote play before I got my steam deck.

There’s a video of me doing it on my profile.

nunofgs: Awesome! What were the settings you figured out for Sonic Frontiers?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

megas88: I followed this video but didn’t even notice the quick settings tweaks they made so ima have to try that and see if I can stay at over 55 constantly. Currently, I’m getting 50-55 consistently with some minor dips as I traverse the open world.

Early-Somewhere-2198: Mine arrives tomorrow. I had a deck. Sold it. Got an ally. Loved it but wanted that true pc experience. Got to build an awesome system. Still want a handheld. Oled it is. Just worried about the sound people complain about. The og deck was good. The ally was amazing. The portal sucked. And now hmmm what the heck valve. Fix the sound

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

megas88: I’ve had the crackling when resuming only on one game which was Sonic generations. Haven’t experienced it on any other and it was fixed by restarting the game.

Hope you enjoy your new oled deck when you get it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago (2 children)

ActiniumNugget: Awesome that you love it! I wish I felt the same about my OLED. It's been a frustrating and disappointing experience so far for me. And now my B button has started sticking :/

Don't mean to rain on your parade, though :D Hope you keep on loving it!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

megas88: Since it’s within warranty, you can always send it to valve to have that fixed. There’s also the whole ifixit repair stuff which is another reason I’m happy with the investment. Making the deck repairable was a great call. You can also ask an independent repair shop if they have any experience or point them to resources that they can understand what they’re working on if not.

I hope you have a better experience with your deck soon.

And thank you.

dlo416: I replaced the screen using iFixIt tutorials and while it was time consuming (didn't want to damage the internals due to the instructions) it was a fairly straight forward and easy process.

swordfishonthebebop: I’m a tiny bit conflicted about my OLED. On one hand, it’s genuinely the best handheld I’ve ever owned. Love SteamOS, love the look and feel, love the performance and screen.

On the other hand, I’ve run into a few “quirks” that have triggered my OCD all over the place and made me question if my Deck is faulty or not. No sticky buttons, no dead pixels, nothing that inherently ruins the performance and usability. It’s more like cosmetic/hardware quirks? The OLED fan makes a very faint buzz/click sound when starting up, and it becomes noticeable when performing actions that cause the Deck’s fan to turn on then off. No biggie if you disable the updated fan curve, but then the fan is always blowing… on top of that, the haptics feel slightly different from each other. The left is a little more coarse, the right a little muffled. Not sure which is “correct,” but it can be fixed by adjusting the haptic output in settings. I’ve also recently noticed clicking L3 activates my left haptics. Not sure if that’s intentional or not. Maybe it’s just the wiring and positioning of the haptic motors?

So there’s general fixes for most of these quirks, which is awesome, but I can’t deny it’s made me wonder if I’m in need of an RMA. I’ve held off the action of doing so because I fear I could get a worse issue upon return. I’m also probably being a little too nitpicky and overthinking a lot of my machine, because as it stands, the device performs beautifully, and that alone is enough for me to ignore these quirks and love it for what it is! I hope if you get some repairs or a new device, you have a better experience!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

dlo416: If you're getting haptic feedback when triggering L3, that shouldn't happen. RMA your device.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

swordfishonthebebop: This is gonna sound completely insane, but hear me out: I was browsing around to see if other people had similar issues. Found a Steam discussion with a very extensive guide on restarting the device a few times, changing haptic sensitivity. It was getting praised for its success, and helped confirm a lot of it was a software issue. I’m apprehensive to try it because it’s dated from 2022 and the OLED models weren’t even out of course, but I grabbed my Deck to begin with it anyways.

Before I started, in the home menu I put my thumb on my left trackpad and clicked into L3 to see if it was gonna do it again. I kid you not, nothing. No haptic. I can’t believe it. I don’t know if I was imaging the whole thing or if it was a software bug. But it’s perfectly normal now. This has completely alleviated my OCD and concerns of defects. I have done absolutely nothing except what I described.

wassinderr: Once I equated the feeling of the left haptic pad to a mouse cursor wheel I got over it quick

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

swordfishonthebebop: Yup, same here!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Ranni386: Stretching it but hey if you like it that much great. It could be a lot better

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

megas88: I understand it could be better for a decent number of folks. Probably the vast majority. However, I don’t play online games and my entire library of almost 200 games seems to work no problem with the exception of online play for fighterz which I’m honestly happy about cause it’s not a fun time with people that live in that game lol.

But for me, it’s perfect. I could honestly ask for very few improvements with a new model. One I came up with in another thread would be an easily concealable compartment for an airtag for stealth tracking and easy removal not unlike the sd card. Could easily stash it on either side of the grips.

darrylwoodsjr: It’s a great handheld but what Dreamcast did with the graphics at the turn of the century is in the conversation.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

mushaaleste2: Nice report, thx. I am near the same, old school gen64 player with all consoles and huge PC collection.

I never get into handhelds, the last try was a ps Vita but it feels as a compromise.

So it took me til this February to give the steam deck a try and wow best decision ever. It's way more then I thought it would be. I play so many games on that thing and I am hooked by the many little things and ideas in the software. The console like experience with the openness of an PC, fantastic.

I have the 512 GB OLED.

Only thing that I dislike comes from the games itself: missing ui scaling functions!

While it's ok that older games don't have it I can't understand newer titles, like steam world build or ratopia don't have any scaling options. It's not only a problem on the deck, it's also a problem on modern 4k tv or monitors.

Even some games that got the full verified struggle with that e.g. rimworld which has a ui scaling function which don't can be used on the deck cause the function says that the resolution is too small to allow scaling....

I managed to get around by using a mod that increase font size, but why the can't build it in?

Also missing controller function on a lot of titles, especially simulations or strategy games. Which should also not a big problem or at worst the age of empires series (definitive edition) which has full controller support on console but not on PC.

Jambonnecode: I love it that the sub has got a "love letter" flair for the Steam Deck. Really thinking about getting one now.

Makegooduseof: What accessories did you buy?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

pochituh: The only drawback it has is that it is very bulky and heavy for a handheld.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

Fit_Librarian_8024: I wish all games were currently compatible. Stupid EAC

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

boiledmilk: For the price, I can definitely agree with you!

ZoteTheMitey: My earliest memories are also of a super nintendo with Mario Paint, playing with my parents.

Do you remember the bug zapper mini game?

I also was a huge fan of mighty morphin power rangers for the SNES. Then I got an N64, a gameboy color/advance, PS1, PS2...the rest is history
