Kaizo107: I get the tinkering fix from modding, so while I do spend a lot of time doing back-end shenanigans, it's not really what I consider "game testing," it's more "finding the perfect experience for a handful of games and then sinking thousands of hours into them"

Steam Deck OLED Available Now! Make Your OLED Dreams Come True!
Slyfox2792004: no thanks. I just want to game. Ive given up on retro gaming after 3 hours of trying to figure it out. makes steam deck little less worth cost but still have xbox remote play and steam games.
shmi: I call it the deck mini-game... Explained it to my.wife tonight and she rolled her eyes at me and chuckled, which is how I feel about it too.
Fox-One-1: I’m happy to be in the opposite camp, but I do realize that I need to thank the enthusiastic testers for many great things we get!
Professional-News362: Nah. Steam deck oled is now my main console. Seriously I've got a 4090 rig collecting dust. I'm even gaming with the dock before even sitting at my pc it's just the best.
Iridiumgreen: isn’t this a post for /pcmasterrace ?
Goseki1: It's so interesting what makes us all tick isn't it? Like I'd be so frustrated and annoyed if I was just buying new games to install, see how they run and then not play them. And then there's folks who love just doing that
No_Dream_899: I am actually a tester professionally so yes 😅
agentfisherUK: I did this post a few days ago :p
Striking_Distance_61: I just installed GEproton and started gaming. adjusting settings to get 30-40 fps on more demanding games is the only "tinkering" i do.
WitcherSLF: I haven’t played a game 3 months after I got the deck . Emulators , modded games , customizations etc
Svensk0: edit: download roms where we physically own the games itsself...dont let Nintendo come after you
russbus64: Me and my word doc feel attacked.
Speaking of which: https://docs.google.com/document/d/19Cx_7iU7GfIr9bDHVwU3SVWqIc_K9Oh3oEyMLMw_YlA/edit?usp=sharing
dema182: I love to tinker, optimize, download and organize ROMs. But my play time is way over that
Denebola2727: This has been the case in PC gaming for decades. Welcome to gaming.
CellularWaffle: lol aaa studios is all gamers as game testers nowadays
Ummgh23: Where are you pulling the 40% figure from?
pentuplemintgum_13:
For me, I get annoyed when I have to mess with settings too much. I will if I have to, but for the most part I play games on default settings. I also don't test games after installing them unless I'm about to play them. Helldivers 2 I played with default settings, looks like shit but plays all right out of the box. I understand wanting to get best performance But I also tend to play more indie, older AAA games, and emulation the deck. I see my deck as a backlog machine for older games mainly.
richardrietdijk: I’m a “patient gamer”. I don’t have time to optimize or test. Lack of this time is the main reason I own a steam deck in the first place.
Magnolia_Fan: Each game sounds so fun, but life... Uh... Finds a way.
RhubarbOtter: Spoken like someone who has never had to spend hundreds of hours testing absolute drivel like Bram Stoker's Dracula or Bob's Bad Day!
Saneless: Not sure what you're talking about. Games release in beta for $70 and full release a year later for $30, right?
At least that's how I treat them
Axon14: So one thing I've noticed is that I don't love to play, say, Diablo IV. I love to prepare to play diablo IV. I deeply research the most minuscule issue, agonize over a single point, find the optimal location for drops, etc.
Actually executing these plans is far less interesting to me than making said plans.
I don't know about being a beta tester, and I typically stick with one game for a while, usually until completion. I do know a lot of players who spend one day with a game and that's it, however. I'm not sure gameplay on the deck changes that at all.
JJ246_gnc: im not a tech savvy person at all. seeing everyone talking about tweaking stuff and getting other programs on the deck confuse me cause i just use it for its main purpose.. playing your steam library.
HenricusKunraht: These comments are sad tbh
syberpunk: It's kind of odd. I have tinkered maybe as much as I've played games on my Deck so far, but I've always been a tinkerer. The Deck is just a new toy for me to learn because I've never used Linux before, so it has a higher level of tinkering before I can sit down and play something. And then I'm wondering if I can play something ELSE that might require tinkering and thinking about how I might solve that problem.
It really is bizarre how many SD owners resonate with this (though, there are plenty that don't). Maybe it's just indicative of how many SD owners are also new to Linux and enjoy learning the unique way things have to be set up in order to run in parity with their more-familiar Windows setups.
kermitthehedgefrog: He’s asking too many questions. Someone take him out.
