txa1265: I did my tinkering in the 80s/90s/00s ... at this point my Steam Deck (original and OLED) are 'vanilla', and play only games from Steam ... and I play tons of games!

Steam Deck OLED Available Now! Make Your OLED Dreams Come True!
I've beat minesweeper 10 times... I'm the ultimate gamer thank you very much.
blusrus: That’s what I love about console gaming, works from the get go and no need to play about with any settings
ElDuderino2112: And as someone who can’t be assed to waste my little free time tinkering with nonsense like that, I thank you all for your service
el_americano: we're modern gamers. Game testers get paid for it
grammar_oligarch: Yeah.
That’s the new model for a lot of companies. Cut cost on testers, have an “early release” that lasts for anywhere from a year to as long as the game is on Steam, ask the community to report any issues, get them to mod to fix issues that can’t be patched, and reap the profits.
I’ve been an unpaid game tester for every Owlcat game that’s been released. I‘ll be damned if it doesn’t work.
We saw some versions of this (old Beta releases of games to dedicated fans), but it’s really kicked into high gear in the last few years.
Most big titles release and require a series of patches for many, many gigs.
I mean, Diablo 4 is jokingly finally coming out of early release; the next patch/update/whatever word they’re using now to describe them testing the game will probably fix major issues with the game.
So yeah, we’re all unpaid game testers. That’s a job market that’ll probably be dead by 2030.
ma_er233: Tinkering is more interesting for me than actually playing the games now.
SaReV0kESP: On another platforms tinkering is a souls like short of amusement but regarding Steam Deck is a recent Pokemon game. Said in a good way. The Deck is just a blessing for emularion purposes. ♡
Coltsbro84: Yes!
"What's the max fps I can push this thing out to?"
"What's the Best quality I can get out of this game and have respectable frame rate?"
What's the lowest quality but highest frame rate I can pump out of these settings?"
"Now what's the max battery life I can get on low settings with the frame rate capped?
"How well does it played docked at 1080p on full blast?"
"Now where would I rank this game as far as playability compared to my other games? Do I need to keep it installed or uninstal it?"
"You know what, this game deserves a spot on my hard drive. What game should I play around with next?"
ma_er233: Also the OS itself, Linux is such a fertile ground for tinkering. If Steam can log the time I spent on the terminal it probably can get into my top five, lol
SleepySneakyFart: Agreed, its become like a game of its own!
SavageTheUnicorn: And then when I can't figure it out I get entirely too pissed off, just like a game
puneet95: maybe there should be a game based on tinkering?
chrimchrimbo: My wife often asks if I enjoyed playing a game. I confess I spent 45 minutes tinkering, 15 minutes actually playing, then just fell asleep.
jakellerVi: Tinkering with a bunch of games backlogged in my library, and then going back to the 8-10 games that I've been playing for the past several years lol
mikezenox: I personally spend a lot more time gaming than tweaking anything, and even then, it's mostly getting the controller inputs to my liking.
Since getting my steam deck, I've completed around 50 or so coop/single-player games, and it's really insane how many of these worked out of the box with no tweaking whatsoever. This is not counting emulated games that have all worked as well (with the exeption of that update that hroke parsing for everyone). 'S.T.A.L.K.E.R. anomaly' is just about the only game that I gave up on (error on startup), but I've since received some tips to use next time I feel like trying.
RieseNacht: … I spent more time and having more fun getting mods ready for TOTW and Fallout 4 than I’ve spent playing both of them . I like them a lot I just haven’t played them
Don’t yall judge me ! Yall do the same thing . It has to be ready JUST INCASE I want to … in the future… when I don’t have games to play 😂
mercury187: What’s totw?
RieseNacht: Tale of two wasteland /the mod that combines Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Basically lets you have new Vegas improvements for Fallout 3
The_Radian: Yeah, right up until a game is so good that it becomes the ONLY one you play. Happens all the time. It's not so much play testing, its looking for that ONE game.
Hinaha: Well.. Yeah. Seems like making things work on the go is the new hobby now
AlwaysTheKop: My life.
Just bought a Anbernic RG35XX, I’m going through the effort of flashing a new SD card for it with a new operating system, downloading gigabytes of ROM’s and BIOS files… even though I know I’ll only play the first 5 mins of any game I start to see how it runs…
xaviflo95: I spend most of the time testing games for 5 minutos than actually playing games on my steam deck lol
Emotional_Ad5833: im the same with porn. i test the video then move onto the next
holounderblade: Only 40%?
poweredbylight: I've been using my steam deck as a Helldivers 2 machine since I've gotten it, I don't know what you're talking about.
MusicOwl: This sounds ironic in the context of this post but - mind sharing what settings you use and what your experience is like? I’ve set everything to lowest or off, 720p and scaling at balanced I think and it is not only blurry but barely hits 30 and also dips below. So far from a „good“ experience in my book but I must admit I’ve put in a couple of hours into the game like that because I was waiting for pc parts to arrive (now I’m back to 4k 120fps my god I’ve missed it so much xD)
Alt0987654321: I spent HOURS getting all my switch games dumped, mods installed, and Yuzu set up properly for all my switch games.
Just to go back to Elden Ring.
drsalvation1919: Game dev here, I can assure you, you are NOT a game tester.
If you were a game tester, I'd be having you jumping on the corner 500 times to ensure that jumping mechanic is not broken, and trying to get you to break physics in the character model while jumping. The fact that you added "optimize" in that list already means you're not a tester lmao, you'd be a modder at best, and that's still very low in the possibility.
SleepySneakyFart: I know its just an exageration
regretchoice: personally I fried my brain trying to set up emudeck last night so i’ll just keep using my deck as a hades machine
Traditional-Bit2203: He's only wrong about the 40%, lowball stat. We all know the 92% of all stats are made up on the spot though.
qdtk: I don’t know about you guys but send me your settings when you’re done. I’m having a great time gaming!
Intelligent-Worry799: Same here.
Some-Other-guy-1971: I unfortunately resemble that comment.
TanguayX: I’m more of a hoarder/curator.
heathenyak: you guys have time for games? lol. I'm able to play like 30-40 minutes of games a day for the last year or so, it sucks lol. Bought a oled steam deck, cool, played with it for an hour, still haven't played a game on it, I've had it for like 2 weeks hehe.
JonnyB2_YouAre1: Sometimes I only play one game for a month or more.
Grace_Omega: Definitely not the case for me. I used to be like that on PC due to some health issues that make sitting at a desk for long periods hard, but since getting the Deck and being able to play in bed I've actually been digging into games again properly.
lalolanda2: But how many of you are game lurkers? I read and watch things about games but never play or tinker with them
actually I don't even own a steam deck
Eceleb-follower: It's ok to stop gaming btw. Most people grow out of their hobbies at some point.
yellow-go: I mean, I’ve been used to being the test monkey and gamer for a long time now. Given that I play on lower to midrange systems, this isn’t that new to me, though it can get irritating sometimes.
Dragomier: I feel so called out
mattumanu: I mostly tweak games by changing the Proton version if they don't work as they should. Other than that, I'm playing the game.
onehundredcups: You know how nvidia’s GeForce experience has a scan games then optimize games? Why doesn’t steam deck have that? I just download and play the games, I should be changing settings? They seem to generally just work.
alex_de_tampa: I’m not a tester you’re a tester ! 😂
allisun1433: I don’t tweak things 😅 But also I’m not the most tech savvy person, and I just get on my SD (or insert other device for gaming of choice here) and go play the game 😅😂
