This "new" revelation seems so bizzar after watching the skiiable snow recede and disappear from the Rockies over the past 40 years... Did people not realize what was happening? I mean, we all knew it was climate change.
Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.
Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.
As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades:
How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world:
Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
Anti-science, inactivism, and unsupported conspiracy theories are not ok here.
I think that, as usual, they didn't care until it affected them.
There was a pretty intense campaign by the fossil fuels industry to convince people that nothing was happening.
Plenty of us live nowhere near any skiable snow. It isn’t particularly surprising to hear about, but not everyone sees the snow receding for themselves over decades. Personally, I find it bizarre that the focus of this article is primarily on the migration of a sport and barely touches on the ecological impact for all the species that are adapted to and dependent on snowy weather. We don’t need skiing to live.
Yup. 16 years ago as I was finishing high school, my friends and I would have a solid 2-3 month window of going to play in the snow on a nearby stretch of mountains. We’d go several times a year every couple weeks. Now, the ski resort there is lucky to have 2-3 weeks of usable snow.
Well this effects the rich fucks. Maybe they'll pay attention now. (Yeah right.)
Most regular skiers are generally pretty climate conscious. Like other outdoorsy sports.
However the people getting rich off the skiers are not, and they're the ones whose bank accounts stand to be impacted by a lack of snow.
They're even more aware, because, as you said, it's impacting their bank accounts. For example, Aspen has been quite public about climate change for a while https://aspen.gov/518/Climate-Action
I'm not sure what you're getting at. The ski industry isn't powerful enough to just fix climate change whenever it wants to. There are much more powerful forces at work.
Oh no! If it would only affect our food supplies, our water, ability to survive, plants and animals it would be a minor nuisance. But skiing? Someone call the national guard! 😭
