When something like that gets edited, the server (e.g. Lemmy) sends out an Update message. That contains the whole post/comment but with the slightly updated content. This mail system just delivers it the same anyway, so we end up with some duplicate mail. Not quite sure how/if Updates should be handled...

Don't know if you're actually looking for suggestions or just thinking out loud so there's some text in the post, but you could have the update as a reply to the original and:

  • Have a heading saying 'was updated to:' with the latest text just as it appears, or
  • Make a diff of the two versions of the comment and use formatting to highlight the changes - e.g. strike-throughs for deleted text and bold for added text

In either case, I guess you would have any subsequent replies to the comment as email replies to the update email, otherwise it could be confusing if a reply makes reference to something that was added in an edit.
