This led me down a rabbit hole of mid western food pages on wikipedia.

I might try making a watergate salad.

Hell yes. Staple of every family gathering ever when I was younger. It’s disgusting to look at but so delicious. Sometimes throw in some mandarin oranges cut up, too.

Interesting. With the Norwegian connection it must've evolved from riskrem ("rice cream", logically enough), a traditional dessert...y way to use leftover rice porridge.
