The newest Halo novel, Halo: Epitaph, written by Kelly Gay released today, February 27, 2024.

Spoiler discussion is allowed, but please mark spoilers as needed.

Summary:

Stripped of armor, might, and memory, the legendary Forerunner warrior known as the Didact was torn from the physical world following his destructive confrontation with the Master Chief and sent reeling into the mysterious depths of a seemingly endless desert wasteland. This once powerful and terrifying figure is now a shadow of his former self—gaunt, broken, desiccated, and alone. But this wasteland is not as barren as it seems. A blue light glints from a thin spire in the far distance…

Thus begins the Didact’s great journey—the final fate of one of the galaxy’s most enigmatic and pivotal figures.

The audiobook is narrated by Keith Szarabajka, the Didact’s voice and mo cap actor for Halo 4, I think it is super cool to see more books using the game VAs.

Edit:

Finally finished the book, wow, another favorite Halo book I guess.

Everything below this is spoilers, tread carefully:

Yet again, Kelly Gay has taken a villain thought unredeemable and made them an excellent protagonist. She did such a great job of pulling on existing story threads and I was so happy at how it all comes together.

I thought it was really interesting that the Didact had a hand in saving Blue Team from the cryptum at the end of H5.

We get a huge amount of understanding of the domain, I’m actually a bit sad that the Didact’s goal in the end is to sever the physical world’s connection to the domain so that it cannot be misused, because we just got a huge lore dump on something that has been so mysterious in Halo for over a decade, and it’s basically going away.

The implication that the Gravemind is the reason that the FUD found Requiem because it wanted the Didact to be awoken in hopes of causing more suffering was incredible. MB, the Didact, and Cortana all being corrupted in the same way, wow.

And we finally got an answer of what happened to the Warden Eternal, I’m pretty satisfied with how it was explained, however it still doesn’t cover what happened to the Created forces such as knights and armiger.
