so how do i post something to different instance? yesterday i posted something to asklemmy which is in lemmy.world from my account which is signed up with lemmy.one but it ended up landing on [email protected]. it will be great if someone can explain how posting works here.

I think that was a bug, because you only need to enter the community you want and post in there.

The community you were posting in was on Beehaw, while your account is on Lemmy.one. The countries analogy might be helpful for you: As a citizen of the Lemmy.one country (instance), you can visit many other countries (instances, like Beehaw). You can interact with the people there, see what they're up to, but you don't live there.

Skip this next part if you're already overwhelmed. (Some fediverse countries forbid you from interacting with them, and vice versa, but that's more complicated than your original question. As a "citizen" of lemmy.world, I can interact with you, but I actually can't interact with members of Beehaw. I can visit Beehaw, but when I go there all I see are other people from lemmy.world. It's like we're quarantined.)
