Welcome to Lemmy (latte.isnot.coffee)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

This is Lemmy, on this server (latte.isnot.coffee) we have /c/china and /c/chinavisa and any other communities you want to make which are local to this server and can be interacted with in the same way as Reddit, that's sort of cool but the magic happens elsewhere.

When you signed up for this server, you got [email protected], you can use this to go to different communities on different lemmy servers as a sort of guest and post there too! So you can post anywhere!

How to find other places? I'm going to call them "foreign" for the sake of simplicity - first you can go to Communities -> All (or click here) which will show you the ones the users here locally have subscribed to, and which server they're on (you'll see a lot of lemmy.ml) - if you click that you can go over there and make a post. Think of it as flying to another country

But not all communities are in that list, if no-one here has gone there yet you won't see it.

Do note that you may get 'lost' if you click an offsite link over there, and end up on a different Lemmy server (thus logged out) - you can simply type latte.isnot.coffee again in your URL bar and you'll be right back at home :)

To add an existing 'foreign' community elsewhere to this server, you simply need to search for it from the Communities -> All page. To search you want to use [email protected] (for example to find /c/gaming you'd use [email protected])

You only need to add it once, then everyone on latte.isnot.coffee can see it on the All page. You will need to subscribe to the 'foreign' community to start bringing comments through. Once that's done, you can interact it like you would local communities

Notes: Sometimes it says "No Results" after searching, don't worry about that. You'll simply need to go back to the Communities -> All page and it will be there!

Notes2: You cannot log into your account here from other Lemmy servers, but you can post from here to other lemmy servers. Just make sure your URL is always latte.isnot.coffee

As an example, a post I made to Lemmy Support on lemmy.ml (a foreign server): https://latte.isnot.coffee/post/291

Notes3: You can browse "foreign" communities here: https://browse.feddit.de/ to see what's out there, then...

To join you simply need the community name (let's take asklemmy as an example) and the server. In this case it would be [email protected] to type into the search bar on Communities -> All on latte.isnot.coffee

As the server grows, you may find your favourite communities already in Communities -> All so don't need to worry about searching/subscribing to it.

Notes4: It's not very good at refreshing for new content, you may have to hit F5

It looks like if I was to make a community it would have to be tied to this instance server. Is that correct? Also, if I start creating a bunch of communities won’t it tax your server? And what if you don’t like a community I create?

Yes it would be tied to the server, we're pretty liberal in what we allow, NSFW is also allowed. We're small enough right now that we don't have a codified set of rules though... I just ask that nothing extreme or illegal (by UK law) comes though

Nothing extreme or anything. If an instance server is about to shut down for some reason, is it easily possible to transfer the data over to another instance to keep it running? Like what about backups for when something goes wrong as well?

Edit: I guess I’m probably overthinking it really.

Yeah, there currently isn't really a way to transfer communities. You can always check https://browse.feddit.de/ and see if the community already exists before you create locally.

Thanks for hosting - is there any plan for keeping this instance running long term or moderating?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Yes this instance will be here for the long term, it's cheap and even without any users I would still use it to interact with the rest of Lemmy because I love the domain ;)

I'm going to keep cruisin' for the answer but I thought I'd ask anyways - is there a way to tailor your search in the community tab?

Lil' difficult to find communities in there with the overwhelming amount of NSFW communities added haha. I imagine I can toggle NSFW for now in my profile, but it'd be nice to know if I can query for tech and have just tech communities/instances/posts appear. Or to remove lemmynsfw.com from the search results.

What are our search-powers? o:

Also ty for hosting @[email protected] <3 It's nice to be here. And sorry if that did something weird, I couldn't resist the blue box

Hey :) I don't think we can drill down into communities yet, the search page is a bit haphazard unfortunately but I think 18.0 is supposed to bring a whole host of new features so I'm just waiting for that for now - deselecting NSFW in your profile does indeed work and stop them showing in results though.

And no problem! We're a small server but I enjoy hosting it :D

Thanks for this! Trying to figure this out. Figured I'd make a Guinea pig community to test it out. So is our user settings and subscriptions just tied to this server?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Correct, but you can subscribe to 'foreign' communities on other servers :) this server won't be going anywhere though

So what does the usage look like for running a Lemmy instance? I'm guessing it would mostly require a ton of disk space? I'm kind of getting the hang of it now.

I tried the Android app but it isn't quite there yet and ended up just adding the main site and the community browser to my home screen. Works better than the apps available so far.

So far we've used 6.2GB, the server it's running on is costing me about $30 a month (2GB RAM, 2 vCPUs) - it's actually pretty light! I will probably upgrade it tomorrow before the rush comes in from Reddit though

Thanks for this. Some of it already made sense, but I didn't realize I might not see some communities when just browsing. I now need to try to recreate my extensive subreddit list. I'm curious, are there mobile apps for Lemmy, is there an API so that we could have something like Apollo or Narwhal but with Lemmy?

There's Jerboa for Android, and Mlem for iOS. And you can search for interesting communities by keyword here: https://browse.feddit.de/ and then head over to https://latte.isnot.coffee/communities/listing_type/All/page/1 and search for them in the top right corner to add them to your personal feed. Once you've populated it, you'll only really have to click "subscribed" on top, and that will act as your frontpage.
