The comic is about “masking” social blight instead of fixing it. So it is clear that social ills including poverty are still widespread.

The technorati are able to remain oblivious more easily with the application of technology.

It’s social commentary on how the rich and powerful are completely and willfully ignorant of others suffering already, and only care to not be exposed to it needlessly.

Yeah, people escaping into their own fantasy virtual realities is the next accident waiting to happen. It could lead to the downfall of the commons. As if people don’t already live in closed enough bubbles of media created reality.
