I've not played the latest Sims games, but I'm sure like a lot of you I played and enjoyed the originals a lot back in the day. Much like CK2 last week I'm sure it's only free so they can tempt you into buying lots of expansions, but the base game itself looks alright. Anyone played this one enough to offer any insight?

It’s much the same basic gameplay as the Sims always is, which is fun but gets boring after a while.

The DLC are a joke, and I’d just suggest downloading them all packed together from fitgirl or something instead of giving EA a cent for it.

I suggest applying Paradox logic to the dlc: buy what you like, pirate the rest.

Tbh I'd suggest pirating the whole thing if you plan to do any modding though. Updates happen randomly and consistently break mods. The only way to stop updates is to have a pirated copy.

If you're looking for mods though, the Sims 4 probably has some of the best mods in the entire series with Sacrificial's mods. There are also really good furry mods if you want animal-people in your game, and one of them is actually kinda recommended for the official werewolf dlc. You can use it to give the werewolves actual tails instead of the little nubs they have by default.

I don't understand why they made werewolves into anthro wolves but didn't give them tails. I guess they'd be too furry if they had tails.

Are tails important in the furry community?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

Yes and no, it depends on the species. Not all fursonas/OCs have tails because not all animals have them (like frogs). However most people like having tails on their fursonas. It's another part of the character that you can customize, design around (see furgonomics), or use in communication (like someone with a dog 'sona wagging their tail).

There are also euphemisms and innuendo related to tails, though I'll spare you the spicy details unless you really want to know.

Personally I like tails on anthro characters, especially if they're digitigrade because to me they either look front-heavy or just look... odd... without them. When you're used to seeing dogs and cats with tails, it looks weird when they suddenly don't have them.

I just recently downloaded the sims 4 because I got a hankering to play the sims after a 5 year break from the franchise. I tried launching the sims 3, which was the last one I played, but it was having a lot of stability issues I didn't have the patience to fix since I could try the sims 4 for free. I am generally disappointed in the base game of ts4. I only have pets and seasons for ts3, but maybe that really is making a big difference, but the gameplay of ts4 is far less enjoyable in my opinion. Build mode is much improved, but I miss the create a style option which made the world feel more varied. You also can't change the size or placement of lots, and the worlds feel much smaller. I don't like the moodlets focused gameplay or the incremental lifetime wish rewards. It really forces all sims to share a specific path to an end goal when in reality there may be several other ways to achieve the end result. I'm also not a fan of the more cartoonish look, but that is more of a stylistic preference rather than a legitimate criticism.

DLC would likely improve my experience playing, but I don't really enjoy the base game enough to invest in any DLC at all. Overall, it probably wouldn't hurt to download if you think you would be interested in it, but I have to agree with the other commenters that it's just a DLC trap, and I say that as somebody who is heavily invested in the Crusader Kings franchise.

I had TS2, TS3 and TS4 and indeed, TS4 base game is the worst of them. I still think that TS3 was the peak if you disregard the severe bugs. TS4 is much better in the bugs department, save corruption was pretty much guaranteed in TS3. And with more of the DLCs it's actually good.

This isn't a giveaway, this is a free-to-play game.

I'm using the [Forever-Free Friday] tag for these occasional non-time-limited free games, you should be able to block that specific string if you don't want to see them

you should be able to block that specific string if you don't want to see them

How does one do that?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Ah, I thought it was a built-in lemmy thing but the settings page in the web ui only offerers blocking users, communities or instances, not filtering specific strings. Do you use a lemmy client? I think most of them let you set a block/filter.

Do you use a lemmy client?

Yes.

I think most of them let you set a block/filter.

I use Jerboa and I can't find any facility to block or filter a community's posts by text.

I guess jerboa is pretty similar to the web ui in terms of features as it's the official client, right? Either way you could try a different client (plenty of posts recommending different ones, I use Summit) or just ignore anything posted on Fridays with the tag if that's not what you're looking for!

so, I've only ever played the first sims waaaayyy back when. How does the free experience in this one compare to the first game? How much is it going to be badgering me to buy dlc?

Some of the reviews mention things like a washing machine being locked behind a paywall, how essential items are these?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

It's not like you can't play the game without the DLCs - if there's something behind a paywall, it doesn't negatively affect your gameplay. The base game just doesn't have that much content, the DLCs are not really a must, but if you want to enjoy it for a long time, the DLCs are a must. I sadly haven't played TS1, but I played all the others and the base game of TS4 is the most lacking of them all. That said, with the DLCs (and mods) it's enjoyable.
