Really wish that the compact mode was more compact too:

  • Don't need to see "via [my instance]" on every post
  • Community instance doesn't need to be as prominent as other info
  • User's instance is rarely information I care about when scrolling through posts

That prefix tells you where users are from and not all users would agree with your request so it should be best implemented as something that can be optionally turned on in the app settings instead of being hard coded into the app

And it would be pretty hard to mention a user on lemmy if someone doesn't know the instance that user is from

Because it is as follows: @[email protected]

To mention a user and you obviously need to know the instance a user is from

I do agree with cleaning it up a bit if it needs to be but I don't personally use the app and am just commenting my opinion on this post

But it shouldn't be outright removed

Sure, but I think that can be omitted from "compact mode." If you're wanting to mention the OP then you're going to open the post anyway and the info can be listed there.

I've edited the post to be more clear about this

the "via $instance" does not add any information if only one instance is configured. Maybe only show this part if multiple instances are used?

I'd rather see them, than not,..as users are distinguishable from communities...

I'm really just talking about in the post list and you can already tell what is what because it's always in the same spot on every post

Even just knocking the transparency of those parts down would clean up the UI but agree that it doesn't need to be front and center at all, tuck it into the post view itself

Agree with both sides of the discussion here. It's useful information that I'd prefer to keep visible. And also, the compact UI for Liftoff is nowhere near compact enough. The amount of post information I can fit on screen (accounting for the fact Liftoff displays more information per post than RiF) has to be still only around half compared to RiF. This actually has a somewhat profound impact on the way I interpret post information while scrolling and it's the main thing that's prevented me from settling into using Liftoff longterm. But I think my issue is due to the vast amount of blank spacing in the design, rather than the inclusion of the longer community/instance info

An option is fine, but please don't get rid of it. I wouldn't want to go back and forth between modes just to see certain info.
