TheDude recently upgraded the server to the most recent version of Lemmy. You'll notice significant improvements to the user interface, and hopefully the functionality is also improved. There is no official changelog yet because this version is not yet finalized, but I'll link the GitHub releases page where it should eventually appear.

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/releases

Edit: 0.18.1 is now fully released and we have upgraded to the final version. You can view the link above for the changelog.

The full release appears to be available now.

I haven't been seeing any updates from the mod team on the agora or on main for a couple of days now. Not sure if this is related or if I'm just seeing things.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah, we upgraded to the full release last night. TheDude posted about it on the matrix chat but I'll update this post as well.

Just as a heads up, it looks like my total comment score was wiped around when the RC update went through. Not super worried about it, but wanted to pass that up the chain just in case.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I heard someone else mention that. Where do you even see your total comment score, I'm not actually sure.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's shown under the profile in WefWef and Connect. Looks like it's not available under jerboa. No idea for the web ui.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ok I've only used Jerboa and the website. Oh well, I don't wanna know anyway, my head is already big enough 😅

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Lol for real though, it's not the first thing I'd want to see in bold, large font at the top of the page when I visit a profile.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Solid, thanks for the update.

CPU usage has dropped by about half so far, so this is looking great so far.

Kbin federation seems to be fixed too now less gooo!!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Kbin federation appears to be working indeed if someone had subscribed to a community before the 0.18.0 update. Waiting to see if a community that no one had subscribed to on this instance syncs in.

Edit: it hasn't been pulled in overnight. Maybe it'll only pull their content in after a new post is made?

Edit 2: It pulled in, but I didn't see that it had because the current default is to hide all posts that you have already read. So confusing!

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah dude holy shit if it's totally fixed that's going to be huge. Basically doubles the userbase

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Isn't Kbin 20% the size of Lemmy?

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 year ago

In reality, probably yes. But AFAIK there is no way to accurately track their active users. You can compare total users, but then you can't accurately measure Lemmy, because most accounts here are bots or abandoned.

https://fedidb.org/current-events/threadiverse

Assuming their activity rate is similar to most Lemmy instances, you could estimate that about 25% of their 60k userbase is active, good for 15k MAUs, or just over 20% of Lemmy's 66k MAUs.

A long winded way of saying you are absolutely correct 😅

@TheDude i dont know if its because of the recent update but for some reason on community i cant create a post with images. i hope this is the right place to report instance problem please point me in the right direction if im incorrect, also thanks for making a good instance and all the work that goes into maintaining the instance.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I see that you were able to post images in earlier posts. As far as I know it still works the same way. Maybe try attaching the image to your reply here? Then I could post it on c/machinist if it's still not working for you.

Btw I think that community looks really cool even though I don't really understand what it's all about 😅. Thanks for being here

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

When I try to add an image I get instead of the image on pc I also get a JavaScript error ill add later to to post

Edit-- nevermind it works now on desktop go figure, Thanks

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Ok, glad you figured it out 👍

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Hopefully this improves the lemmy.world federation somehow. Thanks for the update.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is this why a community I subscribed to is multiple days out of date?

Is there a way to troubleshoot the problem? See if it's on our end or their end?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'm hoping the recent updates both instances have received will resolve it.

Also make sure you're not relying on active and hot feeds. Top>day, 12h, etc is critical.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I think the problem with .world is just that they're too overloaded, but i don't really know anything so yeah, don't take me for granted

Loving the new interface. Seems like it fixed quite a few of the small issues I've had with the UI. Subscribing to a new community from the sidebar is fixed on desktop. Expanding an image, then voting on the post doesn't collapse the image anymore. Voting on posts and comments seems to be almost instant now (probably related to upgrade, but not 100% certain). The "Darkly-Compact" theme is amazing, much more like old.reddit. Haven't seen anything about whether or not @TheDude devoted more compute resources to the instance, but everything seems so, so much more snappy than a few days ago. Read that @db0 somehow tweaked the query parameters for the PG database, which helped reduce the server load (announcement link here). Maybe that would be worth looking into as well to optimize even further.

Edit: Looks like @phiresky has been contributing to Lemmy on GH, I wonder if that's what db0 meant. Though not seeing any commits directly related to DB queries.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

No major changes to the instance, this upgrade really did a lot to optimize performance. We're still seeing some IO spikes here and there but overall performance is much better.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Darkly-Compact” theme is amazing

Yes! Thank you for pointing that out! I just swapped over and and feeling right at home. It's a much better use of horizontal space compared to the default theme.

"Darkly-PureBlack" + OLED blacks:

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 year ago

I wonder if that's why I woke up to 8 inbox replies from up to 3 days ago. 😄
