This is me with my own username trying to figure out which one to use and if I can merge them.
This is why I don’t like that the current apps all hide the instance
In connect there is an option to always show the instance.
(swapping apps) Liftoff seems to show username@non-local-instances by default, but omits the instance if the user is on your instance.
I didn't find anything helpful in Jerboa for this use case.

This is probably one thing that Bluesky does well -- you have the option (and are encouraged) to use your own domain name as a username, and you can do so without having to run an instance.

I'll sometimes search for an acc I want to follow and they have 5 different accounts with different fedi addresses. I know I want the Mastodon account but often there's no indication which one is Mastodon, which one is Pixelfed which one lemmy etc in the name.
So you end up with account@mastodon account@pixelfed [email protected] in the best case.
And account@instancename1 account@instancename2 account@instancename3 in the worst case.
And they all have the same icon and belong to the same person
