They got rid of the Dislike button. Fine. They changed the Homepage to 2 ginormous thumbnails per row. WTF are they thinking? They doubled down and forced that change onto the Subscription page too when people started just using that instead. Now I'v noticed a LOT of videos posted from subscribed creators do not appear on the subscriptions page at all. Go to homepage? There it is plain as day. I'd complain (30second unskippable ad) about the (30second unskippable ad) annoying bombardment (30second unskippable ad) of advertising on (30second unskippable ad) the platform but (30second unskippable ad) I use Ublock.

There has to be some sort of competitor (not Twitch) that is a reasonable equivalent? I'm at my wits end here. It seems all Media Content online has become outright hostile to consumers and I want to go to war.

You can watch youtube videos without annoyances there

This appears to be the most appealing solution to me so far. TY

Well yeah, they're both Invidious instances. Otherwise there's Piped (comes with SponsorBlock), or LightTube.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago

Peertube is the Fediverse equivalent. It needs more content, and more instances to host said content, but it's a good start.

You can use the NewPipe app on mobile to go around adds. And the subscription page shows all the videos of all the channels you are subscribed to

For iOS users, look into sideloading uYou+ or, if you don't wanna mess with this, check out Yattee (quick and dirty setup guide).

Better yet... ReVanced

I've been trying to work out how to import channels on NewPipe with no luck, until I started adding them one by one. For now I'm sticking with Revanced.

  • Go to the Google takeout manager.

  • Log in if asked.

  • Click on "All YouTube data included", then on "Deselect all", then select only "subscriptions" and click "OK".

  • Click on "Next step" and then on "Create export".

  • Click on the "Download" button after it appears.

  • Go back to NewPipe, tap on "Import from YouTube", hit "import file" at the bottom of the screen and select the .zip file.

Thanks, those are the precise newpipe directions I followed a number of times. Searching the internet for a way to make it work I found that it's the same experience many people have.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Took me a while also found it easier to just import the CSV file located inside the zip as the zip file errors out.

[–] BertusVulgaris 2 points 1 year ago

I haven't tried Revanced, but I'll give it a go!

agreed, I use newpipe x SponsorBlock and imported subscriptions w google takeout.

Odyssey I know that SOG is on there, they have a mobile app as well

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

I've been using a mix of selfhosted Invidous / Freetube at home, revanced on the phone. I'm good so far, but I don't consume much YouTube anyway so the homepage / subscription page doesn't impact my experience, as I can personalize it in Invidious anyway.

You can try Peertube or Odyssee.

Subscriptions not appearing on the subscription page? That might make me reconsider paying for YouTube - that page has one job!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Tell me about it. The Julie Noelke Video is the one that caught my eye as being on the YT homepage but not in the subscriptions list. Per other recommendations I've moved to Invidious and here is a comparison of the 18-19hr range of videos. Note that the Invidious list actually has more videos in the 19hr range (including the couple that do show up at 19hrs for YT) than the 4 shown. YT shows ... 2

I bought vinegar on the Mac AppStore and my life has been so much easier. No ads, simple HTML5 player for the videos. Sure you lose some of the more advanced functionality, but fuck it - I’m never going back.

And on my AndroidTV I use SmartTubePlus. Soo good!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Nebula, it is a paid service, but I'm happy to pay for something that just works. There's a lot of smart creators there as well

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Same. A lot of science and history YouTubers post there. And there's a lot of early releases and exclusives like Real Engineering's amazing D-day series. Pretty inexpensive and totally worth it

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Oh, there's also Floatplane with basically the same model. I don't have that one, but I think it's mainly tech YouTubers currently

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They got rid of the Dislike button

There's an extension to get it back

They changed the Homepage to 2 ginormous thumbnails per row

And they've hidden the 'watch later' button, to press it now you first need to wait for the video preview to load 🙄

WTF are they thinking?

It's like they purposely make the UI a little bit worse every two months.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And they’ve hidden the ‘watch later’ button, to press it now you first need to wait for the video preview to load

I forget the exact setting name, but go to settings and then playback and disable a setting related to video previews. That restores the watch later button on hover

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Really? Thank you!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

The unfortunate reality is streaming video is both complex and expensive. Peertube exists, but I'd hardly call it a competitor. Your best option is to install a userscript or use an alternative frontend.

[–] dis_honestfamiliar 3 points 1 year ago

Hey ya'll I have a quick question. So I was thanking content creators make content for the hope to get revenue of some sort. I mean there's got to be some incentive. YouTube is taking things a bit far with multiple unskipable ads. I wish for the old old YouTube. Or maybe competitors. But how can we hope to do that when you need to have an incentive for content creators. Question based on my curiosity not a content creator myself.

NewPipe is the alternative so far. Libretube is cool, but the instances are unstable. Odysee is also good though it can get slow depending on your connection.
