What is Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a science-fiction sub-genre dealing with the integration of society and technology in dystopian settings. Often referred to as “low-life and high tech,” Cyberpunk stories deal with outsiders (punks) who fight against the oppressors in society (usually mega corporations that control everything) via technological means (cyber). If the punks aren’t actively fighting against a megacorp, they’re still dealing with living in a world completely dependent on high technology.

Cyberpunk characteristics include:

Dystopian city setting where mega-corporations rule
Full integration of technology into society, featuring cybernetic implants
Outsider protagonists (punks) who often are very familiar with the technology around them
Hard boiled detective and film noir vibes and influence
Themes dabbling in trans-humanism, existentialism, and what it means to be human.

I'm not going to claim this is a fantastic movie, I'm only saying it isn't as bad as the title would suggest. Because with a name like 'iBoy' I would expect it to be much worse.

It's about a teenager who gets shot in the head while using his cellphone. The bullet lodges cellphone shrapnel into his brain and gives him magical control over all electronics. So he becomes a vigilante to stop the local gangs.

So yes, while you do have to shut off your brain and suspend all disbelief, 'iBoy' is such a stupid title I would've thought it'd be an even dumber movie. Plus, I liked the augmented reality visuals when he used his powers.

The movie is on Netflix, so you can go watch it right now!

From the synopsis, it sounds just as dumb as I'd expect.

I guess I would've expected something called iBoy to be closer to Astro Boy. Like a kids movie about an android or something. So I was pleasantly surprised to find an action movie about a vigilante.

It's just hard to accept the premise. The kid could've been given a magical amulet to control electronics and it would've made just as much sense.

I watched this a while ago just because it had Maisie.

I agree. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Also, if I remember right, it has rape, so if you get triggered by that, I would avoid.
