We may be anonymous strangers on the internet, but we have one thing in common. We may be a world apart, but we're here together!

Welcome to the 24 hour pledge!

I'm pledging myself to not drinking today, and invite you to do the same.

Maybe you're new to /r/stopdrinking and have a hard time deciding what to do next. Maybe you're like me and feel you need a daily commitment or maybe you've been sober for a long time and want to inspire others.

It doesn't matter if you're still hung over from a three day bender or been sober for years, if you just woke up or have already completed a sober day. For the next 24 hours, lets not drink alcohol!

I’ve had 6 years worth of day ones. I would wake up sluggish and announce to my (then) husband I didn’t want to drink anymore. He’d say ok. I’d abstain for a few days, maybe a week, then we would be back to the store to get more wine or Jack. He wouldn’t argue, wouldn’t remind me that I wanted to quit. I was over 40, I was an adult, he supported my choice to not drink AND drink. Three years ago my stepmom passed away, and I moved in with my Dad. My parents had “happy hour” at 3:30 every day and my dad and I continued that tradition. This happened to be at the start of COVID and I worked from home. Happy hour became HOURS. For me, when I realized that 3:30 was like a school bell, and the weekends were fair game, I realized I wasn’t in control of the alcohol, it was in control of me.

** HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY** for those in the US!

Some of the tips collected on Sunday’s post:

MULTIPLE people said to keep NA drink in your hand. (And several added bring your own) Don’t commit to staying any length of time Always have an exit strategy. “I don’t get drunk. I get awesome.” I don’t feel comfortable I don’t stay. Don’t worry about peoples feelings. Once everyone has had a couple they don’t remember that I left anyways . always having something in your hand" at gatherings. Put a koozie on your drink and no one knows its NA.

Stay strong SD Family!

Thanks for sharing this story and for doing the daily check in here! Seems like you've made a good choice as you were no longer in control.

I also have an exit strategy. And I don't care what people think, I just drink tap water sometimes and just ignore the weird looks. At least I don't have a hangover the next day.

Yessss but I need to be better about water. I still drink soda. A different poison. 😔

Shameless plug for water enhancer squirt flavors. Obviously dont use so much you look like the #wateroftheday people on tiktok, thats just a mocktail at that point. 3 or 4 squirts to a pitcher is fine.

"found out im allergic to alcohol", "I like the taste but doc says no alcohol"(NA beers), "regular beer makes me want 20 of them, not 1"

I have used all of these, in that order actually. I hope maybe it can help. IWNDWYT

On our vacation there's literally no humans within 10 miles of us. We are on restricted, private land. Spent the day rock hunting with the family, we found agates and petrified wood! Grateful for this break, and so thankful I can do it sober. No poison for me today!

Ohhh I’ve never seen a wild agate! To my knowledge at least. That must be pretty. Enjoy your vacation!!! 💜
