Mabuhay at maligayang pag-alis sa Lemmy! ✈️

An abandoned community for the Philippines and all things Filipino! πŸ‡΅πŸ‡

Started out as a Reddit alternative during the blackout from Jun 12-21, 2023 with over 1k members in just a few days. Fizzled faster than the "I Didn't Do It" kid after a month until it became the internet's Centralia in less than a year.

I am not sure if I should be doing this, but hell....

For the handful of us who've moved (temporarily or otherwise) to lemm.ee, there's currently a consultation going on about defederation from Meta's Threads. Upvoting the post means you're in favor of defederation.

EDIT:

I was wrong in calling that thread a vote. Changed "there's currently a vote going on about defederation..." to "there's currently about a consultation going on about defederation". At any rate, it's not a vote.

Lemmy ML just put the hammer down and said kthxbye to threads link

Yeah, it's kinda expected from lemmy.ml to do that. The only other instances I expected to act right away are lemmygrad and hexbear. But lemm.ee? Caught me by surprise, lol!

Supporting lemm.ee's decision. Big companies rarely do good when invited into independent spaces.

I missed this part, and I was wrong in calling it a "vote":

... Facebook has a built-in financial incentive to break our rules. ActivityPub has no protections against advertising, so it’s likely we will end up having to eventually defederate from Threads just for this reason alone.

β€Œ ... While personally I feel that any theoretical pros are by far outweighed by cons, I do want to use this opportunity to see how much of the community disagrees with me. I am not intending to run this instance as a democracy (sorry if anybody is disappointed by that), but I would still like to have a clear picture of user feedback for potentially major decisions such as this one.

But yeah, I support lemm.ee's decision as well.

Points for honesty though. Glad I have a .ee account. .world is sorta "on the way but not quite yet there" fucked.

already upvoted because meta can stay where it is, it doesn't need to mix with my lemmy instance

I really hope lemmy.world follows suit, but given the statement lemmy.world admins made, it's still up in the air, if ever.

Question is, what exactly constitutes as "see" in their wait-and-see approach? By the time you realize anything nefarious, it's already too late.

I still stand by what I said yesterday about how Lemmy.world's stance is a lot better than Mastodon.social's stance. However, it's kind of a "at least they're not blatantly singing the praises of Meta joining the Fediverse," which is not a terribly high bar to clear. Also, that at the very least they paid a lip service to "defederation when needed."

But when it really counts? I am not terribly sure Lemmy.world will actually do anything (hence, me tacking that 'if ever" part in the end). And as you've rightfully pointed out--even if they do something, it might already be too late.
