What if the device worked properly but Rodney was just subconsciously deathly afraid of being poisoned or exposed to an allergen or contracting a foodborne illness that the device was like "fuck it, you're just not eating anything then"?

The device deactivated the moment they suggested sending Rodney into a dangerous situation with it so it was definitely just Rodney being more afraid of dying to literally anything else than starving to death.
