Don't see why it would be a problem for him. It's not like they ever attacked him because they wanted to.

It depends on if he realized this or not, and being a silent protagonist, most people project their feelings on to him.

It's pretty easy to miss the evidence they were enslaved in HL1. It's not like it's spelled out explicitly like a level named "Vortigaunt Slave Pits" or something.

Yeah Black Mesa did a way better job showing that they were slaves, with their interactions in the Zen levels
