I've heard that it was a friction fit but it was so hard to slide on in manufacturing that they started using a lubricant (soap-like) to make it easier, which obviously makes it easier to slide off too.

Friction fit that slides immediately into the dash to keep the gas pedal locked sounds like madness to me. I’m just a carpentard though, I don’t like things that aren’t supposed to move to move ever.
