Growing up as a musician I was always trying to be the contrarian that hated Nirvana because they were so popular and their songs were so ‘simple’. I’ve since realized the error of my ways

Yep, just because it's simple doesn't mean it isn't good. The polar opposite is also true. Just because it's complicated doesn't make it good cough cough Tool cough cough

Tool grows on you, at least they did for me. But their fans can be so snooty, constantly looking down on other bands. So yeah, good example of that mindset you guys are talking about
