I mean you know the reason why. Just like apps built by mega corporations each Lemmy instance wants to keep you on their instance.
Lemmy doesn't seem to have this baked in like Kbin does. I would have liked Lemmy admins to work together to cut down the duplication, but there is some ego there. Short of spam / troll attacks, they don't seem to be cutting each other off. Once someone sets up the connection, off instance communities behave just like on-instance ones.
