I was spending a lot more time doing off-road stuff, so I switched from a CRF450L (which I did love) to a KLX300R. Great trail bike.

What makes it better than that CRF? I have a lot of experience with street bikes, but not as much off-road. I would have naively guessed that the CRF would have been a perfect off-road machine for trail riding.

The 450L is great, I did really enjoy it. The problem is, it's better tuned for open, higher speed areas. The stuff we ride is tight technical woods here. Plus I wasn't really doing much road, so green plate (off-road only) made more sense. Insurance is about 25% the price of road legal.
