I'm planning in mailing my macbook into apple, the issue is they couldn't tell me exactly if it was going to be a level 2 or level 3 repair? If its a level 3 I honestly don't want to pay it but at a level 2 I would be fine to pay it.

so if they quoted me at level 3 repair I would be pretty much stuck with paying 300 dollars

I believe they were answering “No”, you are not charged a fee just for them to evaluate it and offer a repair price.

Which is true. Apple does not charge any fee for evaluation of a repair. If you bring/send your device to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, however, they are free to charge what they’d like for this.

… if you accept the quote, then yes, you’d pay $300. Otherwise, you can reject it and take home the un-repaired device.
