Wasn't the matrix based in the paradise that was 1999?

No, the paradise matrix was a failure. Crops were lost. So they changed it to take place at the height of human civilization, just before AI was invented and started the war that destroyed the planet. Humans need to feel pain and suffering in order to accept reality.

But you're right; no PS5 in the Matrix.
